Think I've Overtrained

Recommended Posts

Been getting numbness in hands for about a fortnight coupled with tingling sensations, often quite painful. I've been training wrist roller, pinch grip, grippers and levers about every 2-3 days, coupled with some heavy diy. Reading on the internet it sounds like carpal tunnel syndrome, and if that's the case I think levers would be the most likely culprit. i've obviously been overdoing it with my enthusiastic approach. Question is: will I be okay to carry on doing deadlifts and overhead presses if I leave grip out for a bit? I'm treating with Ibuprofen gel and will use contrast baths more. Does my initial diagnosis sounf okay?

It may be ok for you however one thing to consider is that your hands/wrists are used in almost every activity. If I hurt my hands or my wrists (usually never happens) I take about 3-8 days off to let them heal a little and then I get back to the lifts, excluding hand/wrist specific lifts. For those I wait and see how bad the injury is and then start it back slow and controlled. You may want to see a Doc. however I think you may be ok.

Take it easy, I don't know much about carpel tunnel or nerve damage, so I couln't tell you which it is. It sounded kind of like the nerve damage that one of my friends had, (but his hand was hit by a fork lift...:pinch)

Use your common sense, its your body you can probably play it by feel, but take it easy is always my recomendation to an injury.

Yeah I forgot that extensor work for hand balance is very important, as is proper recovery and active rest activities...(like dexterity balls and something soft to squeez)

I work in an office I get an elastic band or two, run it around the outside of my fingers and thumb and then open my hand, helps me a bit.

I've been doing extensor work and using my Chinese balls. I think I've just hit my hands too hard too soon. I've been rubbing Ibuprofen gel in my elbows and wrists since last night and it's been a l,ot better today, mainly just a background tingle. Ah well, we live, and hopefully, learn.

I would venture a guess that you've just done too much too soon... call it the exuberance of youth (I'm a geezer, so if you are over 40, excuse, please). It sounds as though you have simulated "carpal tunnel syndrome" by working the tendons and ligaments in your wrists harder that they are accustomed to, and as a result, the tissues around them are swelling. This puts pressure on the nerves, thus the numbness, tingling and sometimes pain distal to the pressure. Just cut back a bit in your wrist and grip work, and focus on the biceps and general strength for awhile. If the symptoms disappear, you've established your threshold for the wrists, and don't exceed it. I've lived with these symptoms for about 25 years without any major problems. After really hard grip workouts, I wake up at night and my hands feel like blocks of wood.

I got a little numbness through the pad of the thumb straight up under the nail on my right hand. I actually got the numbness from a spike bend...but it lasted over a week! I took it easy, did some extra rubber band work, and contrast bathed the hands and it went away.

Train hard. Train smart.

Hi John, I'm 42 soon, but according to my wife I still think I'm in my 20's :tongue I think, looking back, it was the wrist roller that has done it. I got a nice new home made one from scaffolding pole, loaded it up and, in retrospect, overexaggerated my ROM. Certainly I noticed my wrists getting "pumped" in the days afterwards, so your diagnosis sounds about spot on. had a workout today, just deads and playing with my beer kegs full of water. Took precautions of contrast baths afterwards, and so far the "tingle" remains the same. heres hoping!
