Craftsman 3/4 Inch Wrench Has Fallen

Swapped a few goodies with my friend Chris, and one of the things I got was the 3/4 inch Craftsman tappet wrench. This is the open end type wrench that you see some of the guys bending the 5/8 version of. I'd never got to try any size of them and I knew that they all were the same length only as the size went up, the metal thickness and width went up so I wasn't sure what to expect. Oh and I knew they broke alot so I decided to try to bend it a little slower to avoid breaking.

Well, I got it but it was extremely hard. Man these things are springy and I did get it to under 90 degrees but I got greedy and wanted just a little more bend and it did snap. My wife thought I'd broken a bone.

I don't really know what to compare it to in toughness because it's a different kind of tough. Not only does it take alot of force but you have to apply it in such long movements. If you just hit small increments it just bounces back. Definately tell they use some good steel and really do some tempering on these bad boys.

Here's a pic:

And I did get this one on Video. Kinda long but maybe Walter can edit it down some.

Enjoy!

Awesome bend Tim! That's sheer insanity man. You ought to write a braced bending E-book.

Thanks everyone!

Cunny. Not a chance. Just kidding. I have dial-up and no digital camcorder and I've found no way to download the videos and rip them off the DVD. I've sent a DVD with bends to Walter at Strongmanfeats.com and he's supposed to post them anyday but I think he's having a lot of stuff to deal with down in Florida right now so I think he's busy.

This bend will go on the next DVD along with the short hot rolled steel bend that he will get. If I could put vids on the internet I would and I hate having to do it this way but oh well.

Ben, I've actually contemplated an article, e-book or even DVD. We'll see.

Thanks!

That's got to be one tough bend, or break, Tim. Congrats!

How far past 90 did it go before busting? The fear of something breaking always gives me the creeps.

Eric,

You and me both buddy. As a matter of fact I'll fess up and let everybody know if Walter posts the vid, you'll see that I bend it to a little under 90 degrees and all this time I have a small piece of thin leather around the center to catch any "shrapnel" if it broke. I got it to maybe 5 degrees under 90 and then I chickened out and put a pair of cotton gloves on to break it. I'd never had a wrench break so I wasn't sure what to expect plus I'd never seen anyone break this size, only the 5/8 so I played it safe and wore the gloves. I would not have gotten hurt without them though and I won't do it next time and rest assured it didn't help with the bend. Somehow I just knew that it was about to break though since it really tightened up.

Also Eric, I've got a summertime show coming up for a youth group and I've got a Louisville slugger put back for that one but to be honest I'm kinda dreading it. That sudden pop and waiting for it kinda puts me on edge.

The permenant bend got to just a little under 90 degrees but with the extreme springiness, I'm guessing it flexed to close to 45 degrees then snapped. I bet these things have a 30 to 40 degree flex in them before you overcome the yield and get a permenant bend. They must be tempered like crazy. To take the permenant bend past 90 degrees at all is in snap and pop territory. I think you can kinda feel it though. As hard as this thing was to bend all the way, it ramps up even more right before the pop.

Anybody ever seen or heard of this size being bent before? I've researched it and found that some of the big names do the 5/8 by 11/16 but this one usually stays in the pack.

It's a different animal to bend than a spike.

Thanks guys!

Tim
