lloyd80s Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 Hi Guys, I'm really enjoying training with my IM #1,#2 and #3 grippers, I've now gone from the #1 to #2.5 in a short space in time ( 4 months). I've been getting closer to the #3 every week but my question is, CAN YOU JUST TRAIN WITH GRIPPERS? I like doing wrist curls, hammer curls and a heavy wrist rolling work to support my gripping strength, is it enough though? I've read so many times that to close big gripper you need to be doing blocks, RT's, sledge hammers, blobs................. The list goes on. I don't really enjoy this kind of gripping though, I'd like to get to close the #3 with the training that I'm doing and just using grippers. My theory is that if the small muscles and tendons in my hands have already got strong enough to jump from a #1 to #2.5 then can they jump from a #1 to #4? Like I say though I maybe soooo wrong as most #3 closers say they do all grip. If your reading this and thinking Lloyd80s has no chance of closing the #3 without other training please let me know. Also if you're of the same mindset as me and only really like grippers, please post the hardest gripper that you've closed by just training with grippers. Oh I forgot, I also use bulldog clips to build my thumbs and a powerball to cool down after my gripper workouts. Cheers Quote IT'S ONLY A SPRING........

Cheers Short answer is probably, but you will have problem (ask Tommy Heslep and Joe Kinney) you don't try your extensors you won't enjoy that success for long.. Also I think to get those goals quicker it would be better to train for an all around grip Quote Name: Rob H
Autolupus Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 Strength gains diminish exponentially, that is to say big gains to start with getting smaller as you get closer to your peak. Squats and deads! To answer your question, yeah you might get there...but not as quickly as if you were to train smart and holisticly. Quote Mike Mackenzie. Luceo non uro.
lloyd80s Posted May 30, 2007 Author Posted May 30, 2007 Err is anyobdy going to say if they've closed a #3 just with gripper training? Quote IT'S ONLY A SPRING........
Scott Styles Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 To keep the strength long term, you need to at least train finger extension and wrist extension. You will probably find dropping all thumb work limits your gripper performance over time. Quote You don't get a dog and do the barking yourself.
ObsceneJester Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Err is anyobdy going to say if they've closed a #3 just with gripper training? I think Paul Doire or Pdoire closed all the way near a SE MMS with just gripper and extensor training. I'm sure there are loads more of people that have closed the #3 with just practicing gripper closes..But over time they realized that it would be a smarter and more realistic goal by doing overall grip. If not I think a lot of them faded away. Also this is coming from someone that hasn't closed the #3, my best was a BBSM, and now a 2.5 Quote Name: Rob H
pdfk20 Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 I basically just train grippers with a bit of pinch thrown in, and am now closing grippers beyond the no.3. So i would say yes to your question. I seem to recall a video from pdoire, where he passed his blob30 (or so, not too heavy) from hand-to-hand about 70 times. Not throwing it though, just passing it from hand to hand. So you can't call that "gripper-only". Quote
ObsceneJester Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 I stand correct, I am mistaken.. he did work on pinch, but from his log they weren't a staple of his workouts Quote Name: Rob H
ox3782 Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 Err is anyobdy going to say if they've closed a #3 just with gripper training? I have and credit card certified on the #3 in 2005.But shortly after I hurt my ring finger tendon and was unable to do any grip for months. This time I train my extensors and care for my hands more and they are stronger now because of it!! gothrik Posted June 1, 2007 Posted June 1, 2007 I am not all that strong on the grippers (IM 1.5 so far) but I just ordered "Mastery of Hand Strength" and in it John says that the formula for strong hands is pinch grip. Wes Posted June 1, 2007 Posted June 1, 2007 (edited) Err is anyobdy going to say if they've closed a #3 just with gripper training? I did, and even got close to the 4. But I will say this.. just training with grippers is stupid If you absolutely have to, at least do no sets, they work a larger ROM Edited June 1, 2007 by Wes Quote There is a natural order. Koura Posted June 1, 2007 Posted June 1, 2007 Yep. Quite stupid and boring. When i started, i trained only grippers about 6 months. I thinked: "so, this is it now? That's all?" Then i started do much more, like pinch, levering, phone books etc.. Training came MUCH sensible. And the best of all is that you can set more goals. Not like "now i closed #2.5 and my next goal is close the #3" This will be boring, especially when your progress start to slow down. You will maybe become frustrated or even stop whole training! But if you train with many exercises, you can imagine that "now, i want to try bend this bolt, tear that deck, lever this hammer, pinch that blob up and so on." When you train only with grippers, yes, you can be better with them. But try to look new exercises and boost those grippers shut! Foir example pinch has great carry over to grippers. I've trained month without any gripper, doing pinch, wrist work etc.. And then i easily done new PR on both hand with grippers.
