jimwylie1 Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 In preparation for the iron grip championships I have been doing timed inverted holds with the #2 gripper one day per week. The only other gripper work that I’ve done during this period has been strapholds with heavy grippers during one other session in the week. The inverted training seems to have paid dividends as my normal crushing strength has recently come on leaps and bounds. On Friday night I closed the Iron man super gripper and last night a PDA gripper rated at 520IP (both belonging to Mr Horne). My crushing has never been stronger and I believe it’s down to training with the grippers in the inverted style. Anybody who’s struggling to close a particular gripper should consider giving it a go as it might work for you too. BTW there’s an excellent article in Iron Grip Magazine on inverted gripper training if anyone’s interested. Guest 115-1005574997 Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 Well done Jim!!!! There haven’t been many trainees world wide who've closed an SOS 520IP. credit to your hard work Its interesting you mentioned how little specific gripper work you've done (especially compared to Kinney) but you have been working very hard on finger, wrist, supportive, thick bar and curling strength. In fact didn’t you say you’ve seen a great improvement in these other areas? Do you think big improvements in all over grip work, in addition to inverted and strap holds helped? So, next stop the #4 maybe? Quote
Griparn Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 I will try to do these. Maybe it train some part of the hands that aren't used when closing it with spring upwards....hmm Thanks for the tips! Quote
Guest 115-1005574997 Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 Inverted grippers really strengthen the 1st and 2nd fingers and timed strapholds get your little and ring fingers pushed to failure. I’ve found that strapholds are extremely high intensity and work all the 'muscle fibers' used in crushing. I think the results speak for themselves as Dave Horne has done the sos 520 IP normal and inverted style and now Jims mashed the 520 himself. Have a read of Iron Grip as its got some very interesting points and i think inverted and strapholds have a lot of potential. Also got a great article by Britain’s first COC, Michael Daly Quote
jimwylie1 Posted July 24, 2002 Author Posted July 24, 2002 Scott I would guess that there are probably a fair few people on this board who could close that gripper without too much trouble. Crushing strength has never been my forte and that’s why I’m so please with my recent gains. I don’t do that much work on the grippers as I have poor recovery time so maybe my other grip training has helped. Closing the #4 isn’t really one of my goals at the moment as I don’t feel that it’s achievable within a reasonable time frame. I don’t really think I’m that suited to crushing to be honest although training in the inverted style certainly seems to have brought things up to par lately. Guest 77-1005097254 Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 Jim. Great stuff!! I agree about the inverted holds being beneficial. When David first mentioned them i had a half hearted attempt on them, but because they felt difficult and awkward i left them out. I now think this was a mistake. Luckily, because i had to train them for the Grip Competition i eventully began to get the feel of them. I have only closed my own No3 but plan to get a harder one. I also feel that inverted closes will be a big help to increase crushing power. Michael. Quote
Bearcat 74 Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 Nice work Jim! Quote Real Name: Heath Sexton Even if you are on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there. ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ
Guest baldy Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 Congrats to Jim, David, and Michael for your recent gains. About the inverted gripper training, it seems that everyone who starts out with the Ivanko SuperGripper quickly progresses with the spring style grippers once they get the feel for them. The ISG in its standard position works like a spring gripper in the inverted position. I don't think that is a coincidence. Quote
apdwler Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 Congratulations!! I'll have to try inverted training, maybe today!! Quote
Nathan Say Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 I hadn't really given the upside-down gripper training a serious try until I read David's IG article either. I think it really helped too. Quote
Faheem Chauhan Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 Cheers for the tip Jim and good work. Faheem Quote
