Tim71
This is kinda like the experience John had with the horseshoes the other day. Today I was working in another town and decided to stop in at this little farming industrial type store that I know has been there for decades. I found the bolt section and to my suprise the grade 8 bolts were 2.25 a pound which is a phenominal price. Well, I looked in the 1/4 by 6 inch bin and I saw some bolts that I've never seen before. They've got lawson written on the head with 4 dashes radiating out underneath the name. I knew there have been other grades in the past like a grade 7 and grade 4 and various others so I was pretty excited about this one. I bought a few and took them to the parking lot and broke out some pads and sure enough they felt like a hard G5 bolt so I wen't back in and picked out the rest and bought them. Wasn't alot of them but it was worth the digging. They look kinda old too some I'm betting they're an old G6 bolt. The fun wasn't over. Across the aisle they had some more bins with Grade 8 bolts and they were the same sizes which suprised me. I found another 1/4 by 6 inch G8 bin and looked and saw the ever familiar "JH" bolts but I looked again towards the back of the bin and I saw some silver bolt and first thought somebody had mixed some G5s in with them but when I pulled them out they were the American made "LE" or Lake Erie bolts. Let me tell you I slapped a couple quickie wraps around one of those in the parking lot and I decided real quick that I better wrap the ends for real. VERY tough G8 bolt. And like I said they're not the normal color either, or at least these weren't. I will send one to Eric to see what they calibrate at but since I've had some G8s that calibrated at a whopping 495 lbs and These feel slightly harder I'd say they may hit 500. Tough to tell though since you never wrap a bolt the exact say way twice and it's hard to tell with the hands. Wasn't as tough as the F911 but definately paves the way for it. I read and older post where somebody stated that they were sort of a "premium" G8 bolt and I agree. Worst crush of any G8 I've bent too. Didn't have many of them but I at least have a few examples now and got to try them. I also saw some of the "black as coal" JH G5 bolts that Eric calibrated long ago only these were a unusable size. At least I consider a 1/2 inch by 10 inch out of my league. I'd like to find some that were 1/4 by 6 inch for my collection. They were a very dull matte black too; not shiny at all. I've found that the long established places like that are always the best and it pays to dig to the bottom and towards the back because as the years go by people don't rotate that type of stock, they just dump the new in. Although I think people sometimes think your stealing or something with the sheer ammount of time you spend in the same spot ha ha! I ended up spending alot longer in that store then I had planned on. Tim
Bob Lipinski
Cool! I didn't mention it, but the recent grade 5 bolts I bought were green. Quote US Handstrength
Tim71
If those are the "JH" bolts I've got some that are kinda shiny greenish color. Eric calibrated them at 400 lbs so they are a nice grade 5 bolt. Tim
makey98
I would have liked to see the people's faces walking by you in the parking lot (if there were any people there...) People would be like, what the he**" Great find, I always look for places like that, but haven't seen any yet.... Quote Current Goals: COC #2.5 45# blob R-Grade 5/G8 DO Deck of cards <10 sec. Tim71
Eric said it calibrated at 405 lbs which is a pretty good G5 bolt. I've never bent one personally but I've done one that cal'd higher than that. I was saying that the only black ones they have were 1/2 inch by 10 inch which is a little out of my league. Well maybe WAY outa my league. Yeah there was a couple people driving by so I tried to kinda hide behind my Explorer. It was unbelievably humid too that day so I was soaked in a matter of minutes especially on the G8. Tim
