mongo02
I have been working hard on my grippers for the last couple weeks, atleast 4 sessions per week with my trainer, #1,#2. My hands have been sore like usual but I didn't think anything was wrong until I went to the Gym. I was doing bench presses and as soon as the weight exceeded 300 my right wrist began to hurt extremely bad. Since then I have had a hard time gripping anything hard as well. Has anyone else experienced this? and should I lay off for a while?
ox3782
Yes I have had these pains and the answer is yes lay off for some time maybe cut down to one or two gripper sessions per week for a while.Could be inflamed tendon could be worse is it clicking or snapping creacking or anything like that anyway you should have it checked out by a doctor so they can advise you properly.try ice and Ibuprofen to help it feel better. Autolupus
should I lay off for a while? If you're in pain, then yes! Go and see your GP, it could be tendonitis, could be the onset of carpal tunnel...get it checked out! Quote Mike Mackenzie. Luceo non uro.
MalachiMcMullen
I have been working hard on my grippers for the last couple weeks And during this time did you do extensor work? Rest properly between workouts? Is the #2 the upper 90% of your crushing strength? If you've neglected extensor work then you may want to lay off for a few days and work your extensors as hard as you worked your grippers and do lightweight/slightly higher volume gripper work. If you didn't rest properly then you may have some type of injury, carpal tunnel or something to that effect so see a doc is all I can say. If you've been working with very heavy grippers and doing alot of maximal effort excercises over the past few weeks it will really beat your wrists up if they're not up to it, so rest until the pain goes away then wait maybe a day or two after. If none then you may have some type of injury anyway so see a doc. Hope you get it sorted out! Good Luck! Has anyone else experienced this? and should I lay off for a while? I've had a similar situation with my wrist as well. The discomfort is at the point where my thumb connects with my wrist. if I take it easy for a copule of days, it usually goes away, but seems to come back again if I get too agressive on the workouts. Treat it like you would any injury, listen to your body. If it hurts, stop.
dimmers
All good advice above! yes, i've had something similar to you but it was due to a golfing injury. It affected my weight training and i remember the bench being a problem too. It got so bad at one point i could only do pressups on my fists to keep my wrist straight (as conventional pressups are done on the palms of the hands). Even using the mouse on my computer caused me problems and i had to start using a wrist rest. Anyway.... You're going to have to stop grippers until this gets better or at least cut down on your workouts a lot. Include a lot of other exercises for your hands/arms including extensor work with elastic bands and some light levering to strengthen the wrist. As always though, consult your doctor, as most of us guys here are just speaking from past experience and aren't really qualified to give you advice (well at least i'm not anyway). hope it gets better matey! Booyah!!!
Cold/hot contrast soaks have helped me. Seems the more I could do them the better over a few days time. And of course the above advice. mongo02
Thanks everyone for the help. I am going to take a couple weeks off and do some extensor work. To answer some of the questions asked, I have been training on grippers for a total of about 5 months. I recently bought the IM extensor bands, about two weeks ago.
