New 80d Pr Bends

I bought a sack of 80d nails at a hardware store and assumed they were keystones cause I saw a keystone box nearby. The first one I bet a couple weeks ago is the one on the left. The one in the middle is one I tried a few nights ago and it was even noticably tougher still; even though the other was extremely hard. When I examined it closer I saw that the head was thicker and the notches were straight slits instead of slanted marks. Unfortunately it was the only one like this in the sack.

Anybody who has some true keystone spikes care to take a look at the pic and see if you can tell which one is the true keystone? Possibly they could both be just one is from a different factory and harder steel or something. The one with the sharper bend in the middle is the toughest 80d I've run acrossed.

Now, on to tonight's PR. I couldn't find any tougher 80d nails so I decided to try a 7/16 by 8 inch 307A bolt which is the one on the right. Man what a fight I had with that bolt but it sure was rewarding at the end. I wouldn't want to do too many of them too often though. Brutal bend to say the least and I didn't time it but I'd say if I made it in 5 minutes it would have been barely.

Here's the link.

Thanks. I got the bolt at my local hardware store. Best place to find them is if you have a tractor supply store or something like that. I live in a farming community so it's not that hard here.

It was a tough bend for sure.

I forgot to say and I assume this should go without saying but these are braced bends.

Aaron,

Thanks for the info. That's kinda what I was leaning towards. I guess the others were some that were mixed in the bin. That's always an issue when you buy from bins but who else but benders would care about that stuff.

Thank John.

Thanks for the offer. I have some FBBC spikes on the way from John, and I've already made arrangements with someone else to post a vid for me of maybe an 80d and a couple other things. It should be fun. BTW, I'm stuck with dialup and windows 98 (okay stop laughing now) because I live in the middle of nowhere and when I call to ask about the availability of broadband I usually have to wait for the rep to stop laughing. That's why I haven't posted any videos. Look on a map for Delta Missouri and then I'm a mile out of town there and you'll see how rural I am.

I did pick up another 7/16 inch bolt today that looks much tougher. I realized a while back that G2 bolts and maybe the others too are measured at the threads and some bolts - especially 307a bolts - generally have a shaft that is smaller than the threads where some are the same and a few are a little thicker. So even though both bolts are 7/16, this new one I picked up today is alot thicker. Not sure if I can do it though since this last one was extremely tough and painful.

Thanks for the info on the spikes guys. Confirms what I suspected. Now I wonder what brand the others are and I wished I'd picked through and got more of the tougher ones.
