MARKR Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 (edited) This is probably nothing new to most of you on the board but i found it interesting. I have 3 different types of thick handled dumbbell two made by Stan Pike of Intense Fitness. The first is a solid globe dumbbell weighing 180lb with a 2.5" thick, 5.5" long handle which i cant do much with the other is a shot loadable dumbbell same grip thickness and handle length as the globe one.The other is a solid plate loadable 2.5" bar. I thought the shot loadable globe dumbbell would be very similar to the solid version to lift, however its actually easier to lift than the plate loadable version. Im guessing the shot must prevent some of the rotation you get from the globes. I was wondering what weight the shot loadable globe bell would need to be to allow me to lift the solid version.I think Mobsterone had mentioned something like 220lb maybe more on a loadble bar before the inch would leave the ground so this is going to be even higher with the shot loadable version Mark Edited April 22, 2007 by MARKR Quote
Autolupus Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 Yours has a 5.5" handle, I think the Inch has a 4" handle, which makes a solid grip more difficult. To be able to lift your solid, you should only have to load your loadable up to 180lb! Quote Mike Mackenzie. Luceo non uro.
mobsterone Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 I'd use the RT weights as comparison as the weight hands under, as will shot. Quote Steve Gardener, British 2006/2008/2009/2010 champ, 117.5kg 2HP, Euro 2008 & 2010 champ
Autolupus Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 Admittedly with the shot loadable dumbbell, the centre of gravity will be below the handle, so therefore it won't try and roll out of your hand like the solid weight will...but even though the weight is below the handle on the RT the handle itself will roll. I was under the impression that the shortness of the Inch's handle was what made it a difficult lift and with MARKR's solid having 5.5", it would make it no more of a challenge than any 2.5" handled dumbbell of the same weight. climber511 Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 I imagine someone with the physics and math background can explain exactly what the differences are between all of them. In my tiny little mind - it seems as if a plate loaded DB tightened so there is no movement should act like the Inch but it doesn't exactly - Mob seems to to spot on with his poundage differences on the various implements as too what will let you lift the Inch. mbcx6pmw Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 The slight difference in mass distribution between the solid and plate loaded versions give a different rotational inertia, which affects the extent to which the bell will try to roll out of your hand. Quote Paul Wood
