BRETTY1 Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 I have made my own 'thick bar' which has a 8.5" circumference. Is this the average size for a 'thick bar' as I cannot seem to find this out anywhere. Also I am doing 'holds' for 30 seconds with 45kg on. My friends struggle to raise it off the floor so do I take it that what I am managing is good or that they just have really weak grips !! Quote

climber511 Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 The standard of thick bars is the IronMind Apollon Axle with an actual 2" diameter. 1 1/2" pipe is often used because it's much cheaper but it's 1 7/8" diameter. For me at least - this difference is good for around 10# or so. Thick DB's are often 2 3/8# to match the IronMind Rolling Thunder handle or the Inch Dumbbell. Your bar is roughly 2.7" or a good bit larger than the norm for either long bars or DB's. A thick bar is either one which is thick to you or simply thicker than a standard bar. Most thick bars are measured on thickness and not diameter - hence them being called thick bars. superfeemiman Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 I read the title and I was thinking circumference was diameter. It scared me for second! It got me thinking though, how much could someone lift on a figurative 8'' diameter bar? It got me thinking though, how much could someone lift on a figurative 8'' diameter bar? I have seen a video of Rick Walker (can't remember where) doing some deadlifts thumbless mixed grip on a HUGE thick bar. Not sure if it was 8'' but i'd say about 5''-6'' at least. mobsterone Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 Ricks a short arse and if memory serves it will have been a 4-inch thick bar. Regardless of height the variation in hand sizes is not so great that he could do a 4-inch bar and someone else much more. Bars which are four inches or more can be pressed but not pulled. Ok, thanks Steve. Looked a lot bigger in the video. Quote real name: Sam Solomi
superfeemiman Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 I think an 8 inch thickbar would be like palming a basketball-wide. It would probably closer to a blockweight, lol.
