12.9 Bolts

hi all

an engineering friend of mine gave me some bolts, they are 150mm x 6mm 12.9 grade.

so being the brave bender that i am i tried to bend it .....wow ....all i got was a sore wrist for my trouble. it did not move :bow

my question to all is has anyone bent these

boland

p.s. contrast baths here i come

A bolt of that grade will most likely snap in two at some point during the bend. Be careful.

thats about 20% tougher than a g8, be careful

Yeah, you don't want something snapping near your neck.

I have few bolts of that grade at 1/4" x 7" measurements. I've tried one and it was extremely springy. I partially cheated to get it done. Luckily it didn't broke, but I'm not going to take that risk again.

thanks for the replies chaps.

so am i right in thinking that these cannot be bent because they would snap first.

bend one in a vice to see but try and bend it fast then if it doesnt break and you feel brave wrap one in a single wrap so the middle is protected then go for it.

Are you referring to an english hex head bolt with 12.9 stamped on it or a true 12.9 grade bolt they are alot different the english hex head 12.9 bolt is just harder than a g8 were as the true 12.9 grade bolt will snap and wont be bent by human hands atleast not mine anyways :D

I have a 8 mm (5/16") 8.8 at home. It's HARD. So I wouldn't try at 12.9 quite yet :D

it is a true 12.9 bolt and if you carnt bend it then what chance have any to bend it he he he

i was having a few pints today with my mates after watching wolves lose and to cheer them up i told them all about the different strengths in bolts and what grades they are. then explained about bending styles and grip sport and you know what he he he im now clased as no1 anorak in the pub :) .....

Ah yes but when they and others next ask you why you bend you then say "BECAUSE YOU CANT" :D

Now this is interesting. How can a piece of metal of "only" 6mm's be so strong? If i ever find one (which i doubt here in the Netherlands) i'm surely going to give it a try ;)

A grade 8 is tough, but if it's only 20% tougher, then i'm sure gazza and several others will definitely be able to bend (or break) it ;)

I think Gazza is saying a true 12.9 instead of an english hex head 12.9 won't be bent because it will snap.

I can tell you guys the F911 bolts showed me exactly how tough a 1/4 inch piece of steel can be. It's really unbelievable how hard they are and the one I bent didn't break. Calibrated at 535 lbs BTW. It's like a super grade 9.

I'm sure it is, but it's still hard to believe :D

But on the other hand, i was also stunned by the strength of a G8 bolt of only 6mm's since 6mm HRS or CRS just bend if it's nothing :)

I'm pretty curious what kind of metal it is and how they prepared it to get it that strong....
