Tim71 Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 Yesterday was a banner day for my unbraced bending. For starters these bends were scattered throughout the day and I really wasn't going to hit it too hard but I kept getting greedy. I started off with a bolt I picked up the other day. It's a 5/16 by 6 inch stainless bolt. It's a "TH" brand but the 485 lbs that Eric calibrated for another brand sounds about right for this one too since it was a little harder than the average G8. Crush took me a few hits. I was pretty happy with this one. Immediately I decided to try the 5/16 hex I got from Ben but I shouldn've because the stainless bolt was a fight but I put maybe a 5/16 inch kink in it. Then I tried the 11/32 drill rod and did about the same although I finished it braced just so I could see what it looks like bent. Pretty tough even like that. Later that night the real fun began. I realized that I've bent a Nucor G8 bolt which cal'd at 445 lbs but I'd never really completely bent the JH and the ultra hard Triangle ones so I decided to try those and got the JH and then the triangle which cal'd at 495 lbs. I personally believe since this bolt is made by brighton best which makes the "L9" bolts that this batch for whatever reason was made of the lamalloy L9 alloy hence the high numbers. Very springy too even for a G8. After a rest I decided to have another go and went for some really hard 70d nail that Ben can tell you has been a goal of mine for a long time. Canadian made and calibrated at 415 lbs. Noticably harder than a bastard. For the first time I got it moving and didn't look back. Probably got it in under 2 minutes. I thought I was done but I decided to get greedy and try one of the new reds I got off Ben. Before I couldn't even hardly put a kink in it but this time it too started moving and I kept at it. I truly believe Eric's numbers of 460 for these new ones as it was alot harder than the 70d in my opinion. Also, unlike alot of CRS, this one never seemed to get any easier. Even the crush was brutal for me at my level plus it was about 1/2 inch off center but it did fall in one session. Not sure about the time as I had a couple rewraps and measures but I'd say good chance it was under the 5 minutes. Last I capped it off and finally bent one of the "world's strongest 60d nails" that Eric cal'd at 480 lbs. I couldn't believe the leap in PRs and I'm one happy bender to say the least. Here's a link to the fun. Red nail and others bent yesterday Tim Quote

bencrush Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 Great job Tim!!! I knew it would be any day when the bigger steel would fall. That Canadian 70D Nail is truly something to be proud of. As are the rest of your bends. Keep murdering that steel! Quote
neilkaz Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 Great work, Tim ..and congrats on taking out a new Red. It seems that IM, just like with the 3# certs will now make it considerably harder to cert a Red since they are using tougher steel. Kind of sucks that they could leave them the way they were, which is bloody tough for the "common man" and come out with 11/32 and 3/8 for the best of the best as new colored nails to cert ! Congrats once again and thx for your tips re:drill rod and steel suppliers. .. neilkaz .. Quote

EricMilfeld Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 Wow, Tim! And Wow again! I'm pretty darn excited for you! That's how it seems to go with the ol' bending. One day you're on the verge of quitting due to lack of progress and then all of a sudden from way out in left field something big happens. Quote
