bencrush Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Yesterday on my 2nd attempt, I bent a 4.25" Grade 5 DU to 43 degrees in 23 seconds. New length PR on the Grade 5. The first 4.25" G5 went to 35 degrees but froze there. Before those bends I kinked a 4" Grade 5, also DU, to 8 degrees. So it is possible. I don't know about getting it to 40 degrees at that short...but we'll see before too long. I will continue with the short Grade 5 obsession until I either get the 4" Grade 5 or until I become certain that it won't be worth the amount of training I'll have to put in to achieve it. I can be hardheaded so that might be a while. Question: What is the shortest Grade 5 ever bent DU? Preferably the same 40 degree rule as I used would be good for comparison, but I'm really interested to know of what the true bending monsters in the past (or present) have done. Terminator was probably a huge DU bender, I don't remember though. Shrug was a huge DU bender. Tommy Heslep maybe? Dave Morton? Martin Kotte is right now. Gazza is right now. Booyah is right now. Franky is up there now. Sorry if I'm leaving anyone out and I'm most likely forgetting a bunch of strong guys. I remember the time when I didn't think that a 4" Grade 5 was possible (for me) DO...and to think that I'll get one DU is funny. Because I'm not nearly as strong as that short G5 would suggest. I almost "bluff" my way through the short G5s...just don't pay them much attention since they're "only" G5s. Sure can't bend a Bastard DU yet. But I am enjoying the thrill of succeeding on the shortie G5s... If nobody has bent one of the 4" Grade 5s DU yet I might just claim it for my own. Instead of the "Edgin" maybe it'll catch on to call a (1/4") 4" Grade 5 an "Edwards." Quick! Someone needs to create a shortie G5 list that's under 5" so those like me that just have too much time on their hands can climb another list. LOL. The current lists are great all kidding aside. I'm up on David Horne's DU list but it only goes to 5" so he's just updating it (thanks again David!) with the newest short bends. Here's to a 4" Grade 5! Quote
GatorGrip Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 You know my love of the smaller stuff but DU is not something I have gave much effort and definetly not Reverse but man this stuff is tempting. The different styles keep the art of bending steel fresh and fun--I got to get in the DU-REV game before I become like horse manure and l am left back on the dusty trail. gazza Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Ben Ive done a 4inch grade 8 in DO and under 4inches on a grade 5 DO not really tried it du or reverse but i do plan on going below a 6inch on the shiny bastards DU style. I think i will be limited by the hands on DU style unless there together then its alot more difficult its a pity KEL doesnt go after the short stuff cause he has the ideal hands for it and plenty of strength. Okay I am really not esepcially when it comes to anything related to showing off -- So I had to go find a decent length bolt to try some DU Style bending. gazza Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 KEL Quite playing with the steel you made that look easy mate i told you you are set for the short stuff. I have to go to the post office tomorrow and pick up a parcel as it was delivered but no one was in i rang them this afternoon and they said its from TIM T of the US so after work tomorrow i am gonna destroy some fbbc stainless as i asked TIM to send me some if the stuff is in there that i asked for then i might play around with a little DU and Reverse as well Quote "There he goes. Booyah!!! Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Hi Ben, Congrats on that very short 4.25 Grd 5 bolt Quote I Love Bending Steel http://www.youtube.com/user/booyahbender
bencrush Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 Thanks guys! Walter, I was really hoping to lure you into joining the DU train! Hell yeah! That was an astounding 4.5" Grade 5 DU bend on YouTube! Can't even believe how quick you bent it in one hit... Serious power! I knew you'd be custom built for the short Grade 5s especially DU. Your hand size will be a good thing there...and your awesome power and strength are a good thing anywhere. Quote
neilkaz Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Nice DU bending, Ben !! Time for a cut grade 8 or Red ? .. neilkaz .. Quote

pdfk20 Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Ben those G5 bolts you are bending, are they that short when you got them or are you cutting them down? And if you are cutting then down then , the bolts you have sent me when they arrive will they too be easy enough to cut down? I've been giving my pinkies hell recently going sub 4.5" and i'll definately be up for following in your footsteps with some short DU G5 bending. GatorGrip Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Thank you my Brothers of Steel, I tried a 6" Grade 5 a few days ago and also got it "First Try" -- I love it when you try something new and it ends up being a decent PR out of the gate-- Don't You? If you would like to take a quick look at the DU 6" Grade 5 here is a link--I think it is alot faster on the bend: So far I have bent a 6" and a 4.5" DU and once I get some 4" Gr5 bolts I will give it a shot. I have tried a couple 4" Gr5s DO a while back but the threads snap off on the first hit so DU must be the way to go to avoid that problem. http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=4894939 Thanks Again For All The Encouragement and Motivation -- Now Go Bend Something Better So I Can Try It! They're 6" G5s that I cut down to size with bolt cutters. Then I use a bench grinder to smooth the rough edge. The G5s are not that hard to cut down if you have at least a hacksaw. Bolt cutters are much quicker though. Good luck with your shorty G5 bending! I think you'll surpass me before too long. Quote
dimmers Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 Forgot to post this yesterday, but great bends Gatorgrip! I've only just managed to do a G5 recently and it took me ages to put under 2 inches (found the crush really tough), but you destroyed that short G5 in no time at all, great bend DU but what made me laugh was how easy you crushed the thing down to under 2 inches! Seeing all these vids and hearing about all the great bends everyone here is doing really does motivate me to get better Quote
dimmers Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 Oops! sorry Ben, forget to say congrats on the short G5's to you as well. I've only seen a few of your bends on youtube, any chance you could put together something for all this bending you've been doing recently? i find watching the vids on youtube you guys put up very good for getting tips on form and stuff. cheers Quote
gazza Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 I think Ben and Gator should have a bending race to the shortest DU Style g5 and g8 maybe Reverse as well what am i saying i know these 2 guys dont like challenges Quote "There he goes. SHRUG Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 Hey Ben, great job and keep killing that steel. Anyway I never really messed with anything below 5" because I found it really awkward in my hands due to the size of my palms. Even with a piece of steel that was around 5" I would have to make my pinkies touch in order to get 2 full fingers from each hand on the steel. Going shorter sounds interesting for sure but I just never got involved in it, that area is all yours brother, KILL IT! SHRUG Quote

gazza Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 Thats because hes only doing easy stock seriously no one and i mean no one will ever get the best outa themselves without getting a little animatedthe body wont push itself if its calm cause if that was the case we would all just bend hard stock like it was a coathanger Quote "There he goes. bencrush Posted August 18, 2007 Author Posted August 18, 2007 I found this because I was going through my old videos and I got broadband finally. So I tried to upload a video from months ago of a sub-4" Grade 5 DU. Thought it loaded up on YouTube (because I loaded some other videos up) so I deleted it. Trouble is I'm not seeing it on YT. Hope it shows up in a few days because I didn't realize that I had gotten the shorty G5 on video. I mismarked it as a 4" G5 instead when I named the file. Then I watched it and was pleased to see the shorter one there. Kel you ought to take up the DU quest again and go sub 4" yourself. You'd probably go short G8 soon too. I did a 5.5" G8 the other day but didn't get video yet. Quote
