Tim71 Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 Boy it was another good day for a couple PRs in mid-length braced bending. First of all I finally got the super-tough 80d nail that I've had around for a while. These are the ones that calibrated just shy of 600 lbs which is some 90 lbs tougher than the galvanized one I bent a week or so ago. Next I cut 2 inches of my old PR of 11 inches on the 7/16 hot rolled steel. I got a bend of 9 inches which I was pretty happy. I think I could've got 8.5 quite honestly seeing how the bend was off-center. I was happy with it although it may add another couple days rest before I'm willing to try a video of the bastard bar for certing. Was a good day though albeit a very painful one. I've got one 80d left that I think may be a little tougher still than this one but not by much. I'll need to recoup though. Later, Tim Quote

Tim71 Posted March 31, 2007 Author Posted March 31, 2007 Fatboy, I did. I just took another inch off the 7/16 with an 8 inch piece bent just minutes ago. Another pic coming! Tim Quote
Booyah!!! Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 Nice 8" bends Tim!!! Have you tried a 8" FBBC Spike? Quote I Love Bending Steel http://www.youtube.com/user/booyahbender
Tim71 Posted March 31, 2007 Author Posted March 31, 2007 Thanks guys! Booyah. I didn't order any spikes from John in my last order but I intend to next time. However, I'm glad to say that I decided to hit the keystone 8 inch non-galvanized spikes that I picked up last weekend and I'm happy to say that it did indeed fall. I'd say that it's the toughest spike I've bent. The crush was tougher than the one bent earlier today. I may send one to Eric for an official answer to it's poundage question. I can say that the crush was tougher on this one and if John's spikes are similiar to this one and Gazza bends one unbraced then we need to have him checked out and see if he didn't come here from another planet or see if Kryptonite has an effect on him. Later guys! I'm having a great night and can't decide if there's anything else I want to try. Tim Quote
Tim71 Posted March 31, 2007 Author Posted March 31, 2007 I'd like to thank Eric Milfeld for the quote below about 10 months ago. I'd never considered the spikes and was only into long-bars like 3 and 4 foot and when he replied with this it kinda got me going in yet another area of steel bending. At the time I failed on the 12 inch spiral griprite spike. I'm posting another pic right now of the latest 80d bend. It's a killer. Tim Great bend, Tim! I've never tried that particular dimension, but I'll surely pick some up next time I hit Metal Supermarket. The thickest I've played with is 1/2". Have you tried spikes? They make for fun mid-length bending. Quote
FatBoy Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 Great job Tim Can you set one more PR tonight, if not order some FBBC 8" spikes. I woukd like to see your name be next on the list. Good luck. For me PR's usually come in pairs of 2 to 3 and sometimes 4 if I'm lucky. Quote God didn't want the Irish to rule the world so he invented Whisky. Real name: William McCaslin
Dude Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 You're becoming a PR slut. haha. Tim are you buying these spikes at Home Depot or a similar store? I've never tried to buy them but you're posts make them sound like a good time. Quote Name:Ron 2006 Goals: Grand Bastard MM3
Alawadhi Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 Awesome! You are one of the best braced benders out there and improving. I have a question, when you bend these stuff do you push it against your leg or pull it on your knees? and do you use a towel on your legs or knees for protection because the pressure hurts. gazza Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 Tim Maybe PAT or big steve or someone can chime in here as i dont have as much knowledge about spikes and big nails as i do steel and so long as its not a skinny 80d which it aint then in my book its a WIDOW MAKER and that there is a very short list to be on Quote "There he goes. bentpresser Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 This guy is the real deal. I sent him some steel that wasn't easy, and he owned it. Congrats! Quote
Tim71 Posted April 1, 2007 Author Posted April 1, 2007 Dude, I have bought some spikes at home depot. The 8 inch galvanized I bought at lowes, the "tough" 80d I bought at ace hardware and the toughest one I bought at some mom and pop place while out of town. FBBC sells 3 sizes of spikes too but I hear they are not for beginers. Best to start with the 12 inchers which are still a pretty nice bend in anybody's book. Spirals are normally the easiest followed by griprite galvanized then shiny griprites then FBBC. Then you can work your way to the 10 inch or 100d nails although the FBBC 12 incher is probably tougher than the easiest 100d or pretty close to it. Alawadi, thanks for the sentiments! I'm really enjoying this although ironically the spikes are as much a pain endurance test as a feat of strength. When I started bending spikes I pulled them under my knee like Eric Milfeld or Gazza does but recently I started pushing down over my leg. Either way has produced some good results and sometimes I do use a towel or piece of leather which is totally legal. Not always but sometimes. Bentpresser, Thanks for the compliments but there's people on this board who could wipe out that short steel much faster than I did believe me. I do thank you though and enjoyed bending some new stuff! Nice work on reverse bending those tough 60ds by the way. Thanks guys for all the congrats! Tim Quote
