ObsceneJester Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 Alright I came to an end of my steel and I tried to bend this grade 5 for sometime and no luck, so I was looking over the FBBC site and was wondering should I make my own order(if so what should I order) or order the advance bag.. I can bend a 1/4 5" regulary(but can't bend a g5 yet), I can bend average 60D nails and was wondering what would be a good option.. See I would like to get steel that I normally couldn't get here.. I can find G5's but I can't find G8's.. The other day I bought some steel that said 5/16 CRS on it, and I got home and measured it in some capers to 3/8 Yes my goals are to bend a Red but to continue on past that Thanks again, Rob Quote Name: Rob H
Tim71 Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 The 1/4 inch hex from FBBC would be an excellent choice for you. Also, there are some tough 60d nails out there that really help bridge the way to the G5. I have probably 10 different kinds of 60d nails that calibrate anywhere from 265 lbs all the way up to 330 lbs and the 330s feel very close to the G5 bolts. Tim Quote
bencrush Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 Rob, I'd recommend using the "reload" option that John offers instead. You don't have to buy a Bender's Bag to get a bunch of steel. You could buy ONLY the steel that is specific for your needs and goals right now. The Bender's Bags are great, don't get me wrong, just saying that you'd be better served getting exactly what you need. Tim's advice is excellent. The 1/4" Hex is superb stuff. Very hard though. Definitely comparable to 1/4"X6" Grade 5s. What I'd get if I were you: (10) 1/4"X5.5" CRS (10) 1/4"X5" CRS (20) 1/4"X7" Hex (20) 1/4"X6" Hex (10) 1/4"X6" Grade 8 (20) 1/4"X7" Square (50) 7" Bastards I know that's a lot of steel. But if it's a burning desire to get that Bastard then work some more hours and get exactly what you need. On the 7" Bastards, I'd kink about 10 of them to 90 degrees and then use them in a crushdown focus workout. If you can't budge them from 90 degrees, kink 1 to about 2" between the tips. Give that a shot. I wouldn't go any narrower than 2" at the start though. You can crush them under 2" but I mean I wouldn't recommend prekinking them to less than 2" right now. Save that for much harder stock. Kink a few to 45 degrees. Try those on your sweep focus day. There are a million ways to get there. Some are faster than others. Good luck and I hope you find the quickest path to the Bastard! Quote
ObsceneJester Posted March 25, 2007 Author Posted March 25, 2007 Ben and Tim thank you for the help.. Ben when you say that the Hex is comparable to a G5 I don't understand? I can't bend a G5 Right this second Quote Name: Rob H
Tim71 Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 The hex is comparable to some G5s at the 6 inch length but I was thinking that you could order the 7 inch length since your goal is the red. Then you could work your way down. The way I personally got to the G5s and I'm no expert mind you, is that I got some harder 60d nails and once I could do those pretty decently then I got a G5 with a fight. Helps to know what kind of G5 to get too though. The easiest ones I've done had a smaller hollow triangle on the head with the 3 dashes. Calibrated at 390 lbs but really didn't feel quite that hard to me. 1/4 inch drill rod is another option but it's not a big jump up from the CRS. Good luck! Tim Quote

Good luck and happy training dont forget the ISOS on prekinked harder stock. Quote "There he goes. One of gods own prototypes. bencrush Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 Ben and Tim thank you for the help.. Ben when you say that the Hex is comparable to a G5 I don't understand? I can't bend a G5 Right this second The 1/4" Hex feels the same as a Grade 5 to me when I'm bending them DU so the 7" Hex should be wonderful training to get you a bit closer to your goal of the 7" Bastard in time. The Hex is a small step up from the 1/4" Round and enough that it will propel you a step closer. The 6" Hex will be there when you're ready to get strong enough for the Grade 5 at 6" level. Quote
Tim71 Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 I do agree with been about the 6 inch length on the hex. Even though the numbers don't match up the hex feels every bit as hard as the lesser G5s. My best piece of advice is to take Gazza's and Ben's advice. Those guys know their stuff and I think Gazza's blood is magnetic by now. Tim Quote
