U.s. grip strength championships

I regretfully inform you that the U.S. Grip Strength Championships has been forced to be canceled.  Being that there are only two people who have paid the entry fee thus far, and that there is very little local or national interest in this contest, I have been left with little choice.

Because of the low entries, I would take a significant financial hit to pay for prizes, venue, equipment that we don't have, etc. and I don't have the means at this time.

BC.

Sorry to hear that.  I really wish that grip contests would get more publicity.  I think the problem is that there are only a few grip contests in the country and they are only in a couple states (that I'm aware of).  If people would put on a grip contest in addition to a powerlifting contest or something, I think that would get the ball rolling.

What a shame.

That is a pity.  I always look forward to hearing the results of competitions even if I am not competing in them.  I guess we are lucky in the UK, as Travelling is less of an issue for most of us.

You still have the Iron grip champs to look forward to Brian.  It promises to be a bit of a clash of the titans by the look of the entry list.  See you in August

To those merry souls of other days- who again will make drinking a pleasure- who acheive contentment long before capacity- and who- whatever they may drink- prove able to carry it- and enjoy it- and remain gentlemen.

Brian-

That sucks.  It really does...

Oh well, I say go with what I mentioned before, and put your energy into training for and promoting the strongman stuff, because you know there is some interest there, and you will actually get a return for all your effort.

I figured that the grip thing might actually take off, what with the training not having to be that 'heavy' by necessity, which I thought would play on the general tendency towards laziness with respect to training and competing in the US.  I guess I actually OVER-estimated the average level of desire and commitment among grip-interested people... that's pretty sad.

Anyway, take the lesson/experience for what it is worth, and realize no matter what *your* level of desire and effort is, as they say, "you can give a nerd his gripper, but you can't drag him out of his basement to make him close it (or NOT) in front of other people."

I just realized that the population of England (not the entire UK) is like 49 million.  That means that if they get 15 people this year, they will have one out of every 3.2 million people in the country participating in their Grip Championships.   In the US, with a population of 281 million, and the total number of entrants at *2*!, that given you 1 in every 140 million.  I guess what they say about those Europeans being stronger is right...

The Löddeköpinge Grip Challenge competition has had an average of 8 guys competing. Sweden has about 9 million people. Here is another one, the Scandinavian countries (Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Island) have about 25-30 million people or one tenth of the US population and yet we would kick the US butt big time in an Strongman competition featuring the US vs. Scandinavia. I think lazyness has a lot to do with it as there are plenty of people with Scandinavian ancestor living in the US. I fully understand that people may chose not to compete but competition is an excellent way of promoting the (grip) sport and take it out of basements.
