superfeemiman
I have recently been getting into gripping again and I am going to start doing plate pinching. I remember about 4 months ago I tried doing them but they always have made my thumbs feel weird when I grab the plate. My question is: How do you grab the plates? I read David Horne's begginner thread, and I understand for most part. But are your thumb pads and your finger pads supposed to be directly touching the plate? I ask this because either my thumb pad or my finger pads can be directly touching. Both can't. Usually I'd do them with my fingers crooked a tiny bit and my thumb was touching with the side of pad. Is is okay? If anyone can show me a picture of both sides (thumb and finger) or explain to me it would be appreciated.
big bri
when i do it my thumb and fingers are typically the only parts of my hand touching the plates. my palm and thumbpad usually don't have any contact with the plates after i start lifting them. i would be inclined to say that there is no technique to lifting plates, you just kind of do it if you know what i mean. no matter how i set my hand up when i start to lift the plates they always end up just touching my fingers and thumb. perhaps someone else would have a different opinion on this subject. Yeah, I know what you mean. But you know, better to be safe then sorry I guess. Anyway, that's pretty much how my pinches are (no palm) it was mostly just my thumb placment because my thumb is always touching on the side(meaning not the pad). I guess I will stop worrying so much on specific grip placements because this is the easiest and feels the best for me anyway.
David Horne
If you can adjust the width of the discs (ie. adjustable pinch set-up), then always try to get the fingers flat and the thumb flat (even if it is side on). More friction is gained on the surface this way. If the width is wider or narrower and won't allow this, then decide which side to give a little. Most people will want to keep as much thumb on the object's side. David

However I will have to say that when I try it(both flat on the plate), it feels very awkward so maybe I'll just have to keep at it and adjust. Also, thanks for everyone's help!
