Starkmann
Just thought it was interesting when I found an older COC#1 and T yesterday. The number was only stamped on one side of the handle not both. Sliver grip with black spring, really black. I didn't have the little unknurled ring that mine have either. The trainer was a tad rusty and a very easy close. The #1 was actually harder than the #1 I own from about a year ago. I'm no expert so I won't try to rate it or anything. I handed it to a #3 closer who also agreed it was harder than the current number one. Just an interesting story Is there anyone that can give me an idea how old this one was? Someone there suggested six years.

Ironmind changed to aluminum handles in 1995. I do not know if the bands were milled on in 95.
Starkmann
I can't say for sure but I think the handles were aluminum. Ididn't notice that they felt all that different from my own COC handles except that these seemed hardly used so the knurling was sharp. Also, the trainer had rust on the spring but none on the handles, so I will assume aluminum.

If the handles are steel, your gripper would be roughly twice as heavy as the aluminum grippers. Do the handles have compression pins much like the Beefbuilders? Starkmann
I don't actually know what those are, I have no beef builders but I saw nothing, "pin-like" on them so I would say, no they do not.
