jaccord
Got my first Grade 8 today. I warmed up for a while with my wrist roller. I bent a grade 2, a piece of ¼" x 7" hrs, 5/16" x 7 carriage bolt and a grade 5 for warm up. I was going to just try a few more grade 5s, but that box of grade 8s I have was staring me down. I was unsuccessful at my attempt of a grade 8 last week. So I gave it a go. It took 6-8 minutes to complete. I kinked it to about 90 degrees in the first 15 seconds or so, then proceeded to have some trouble with the crushdown. But I got it after several minutes. Thought I might have bruised my right hand, but it's fine. I used leather wraps. Josh Grade

steelbiceps
Congratulations, Josh. How long was the g8? And do you really find 5/16" grade 2s easier than 1/4" grade 8s? I find the reverse, but maybe it's just mental.
jaccord
Thanks guys. Stan- the g8 was 6". The 5/16 bolt I bent was the kind that has threads the entire length of the bolt. I'm pretty sure it's called a carriage bolt. The grade 8 was much more difficult.
Tim71
From my very limited experience, the carriage bolts with the full length threads are significantly easier than the hex head grade 2 bolts. Tim
GetAGrip87
So do you guys think the 5/16" hex head Grade 2 bolts are harder than the 1/4"x 6" Grade 8? I can bend the 5/16" Grade 2's but have never tried the Grade 5's or Grade 8's because no place around here carries the right sizes.
jaccord
I've never bent a 5/16" grade 2, so I can't say. I have bent a 5/16" carriage bolt (a bolt that has threads the entire length) and it's much easier than a g5 or g8.
gazza
Josh Nice work on the g8
Tim71
According to Eric's excellent chart, the grade 5 and grade 8 are significantly harder that the grade 2 hex head bolt. The grade 2 carriage bolt (full threads and round head) are much, much easier. Hope this helps. Tim
steelbiceps
Yeah, I was thinking lag bolts -- threaded only at the end. 5/16" lag bolts are, I think, a good bit harder than g8's or 1/4" square crs.
