Sampson777
I am just starting with grippers, and am 50 years old. What would you suggest for training?

oso
since you added that 50 yrs old thing, you must be concerned about what you should do to keep healthy and all? You'll be amazed at how much you can gain off of hand strength at older ages. http://www.heavygrips.com/training/beginner.html could get you started.. There are lots of others i just can't find the links to them

Sampson777
What grippers did you get, what could you do with them, what are your immediate goals AND finally... what is your current grip routine look like? I got Heavy Grippers 200/250/300. I got them in January, and have been laying off them for a while, since I developed a case of Tennis Elbow, which is just about healed well enough to go back to gripper training. I can just barely close the 200 with each hand individually. I started out using the grippers once a week. Then I started using them about 3 x per week, single closes, and multiple times throughout the day. I was on travel for a week and could not use them. After that week is when the Tennis Elbow showed up.
Sybersnott
So what you're saying is that the grippers are aggravating your tennis elbow? You might need to get the IM Trainer and #1 grippers since the HG200 is a bit difficult for you and you need something else to work up to that. Do you do any other grip training besides working on the grippers?
Bearcat 74
I would just go ahead and buy T, #1, #2, #3. You will eventually buy them all anyway.

Do you do any other grip training besides working on the grippers? The Grippers were aggravating it, but I'm not sure they were the cause. Actually, the reverse curl exercise is the worst, and I may have been locking out my arms on some exercises, which I am not now. The injury is healing, and now it does not hurt to use the Grippers. also, If I can't fully close a gripper, I either close it with 2 hands, and then remove one, and hold for 5 seconds, or simply just close it as far as I can. I have been resting from the Grippers for a while, but don't think I need to get a 100. Think I just need to train 2x a week instead of 3. Before I got the grippers, I was doing some self resistance grip work.

The HG 200 is now easy to close, and rep. Edited August 25, 2006 by Sampson777
TelegraphKey
For tennis elbow, do these: (1) Finger Extensions - take a rubber band (or order Expand-Your-Hands Bands from Ironmind.com), wrap it around the tips of your fingers (on the outside/fingernails), and open your fingers, pushing the rubber band out. This is "opposite-muscle" work from all the closing-hands grip work, and is vital to hand health & elbow health. Do 15-30 or more reps for a few sets, 2-3 X per week. (2) High-rep reverse WRIST curls (wrist extensions) - palms down, hold bar or dumbell in hands, bend at the wrist (NOT at the elbow), do 15-30 or more reps of reverse wrist curls for 2 or more sets, at least a couple times per week Edited August 25, 2006 by TelegraphKey
