Question About Hammers.

I was at a hardware store today, and saw they had 8lbs and 10lbs hammers, both 36" long. I looked around to see if anyone was looking at me, and since I didn't find anyone, I decided to try and put it parallel to the ground, grabbing it by the very end of it. No way Jose! Not even close. That's all the ones they had.. I know that one doesn't need to keep buying hammers, one could get a light one and then weld a piece to add some weight... but still, if I can't lever the 8lbs one, what am I gonna do?

So my question is: can one start training with a hammer that one canNOT lever, but grabbing it closer to the weight? And gradually grab it further and further, till you can lever it grabbing it by the very end of the stick. Does this sound smart? I've been only training for about 3 workouts. Maybe I should just workout a bit more till I can properly lever the 8lbs one? Wotcha think? It looked fun and I could use some wrist strength!

yea man that is the best way...you already had it figured out....and to tell you the truth holding a hammer parallel to the ground from the end is very tough even with an 8lb most ppl here that lever do it reverse with the head of the hammer straight up and your arm out it front and lever it back toward you head or shoulder....but yea pick up the 8 pounder and measure and put some marks on it at around 22 inches and up and start by putting your pointer finger on the handle at the shortest mark and training where you feel comfortable about the movement and then start moving toward the back of the handle till you can get it all the way at the end!!! Good luck to ya...Levering is Tough fun!

Yes. Get the biggest hammer, that you can possibly find. A 20 pounder would be awesome. I started with a 16 and I have outgrown it and I will need to buy a 20. :erm

Just weld a small piece of metal to it, so you can hang plates on it, small plates of 2-3 lbs. Must be cheaper than buying more hammers. I bought the 8lbs as I'm not even close to levering it yet. I wont buy more, they're not that cheap, heh, I'll just weld a piece when I can lever this one, and attach small weights on it.

I don't know how to excercise with it.... lever it to my head... what else? And what do people do with these levers? Reps? Or what?

There's, like, 10-15 recent threads on the main "Gripboard" forum about lever exercises, reps, etc. Do a search there!
