Crotchulla
Just wondering, I can't find any. Local stores only have G2s so I checked online. Boltdepot only have big sizes of G5, McMaster-Carr only have G8s. Should I just get bigger sized G2s? I hope someone can help me out. Wes
All of my local hardware stores carry Grade 5's. Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Lowes, all those have them. What size are you looking for?
Alawadhi
i think the normal size. 1/4*6 or 7 inch long.
jaccord
I got mine at Orchard Supply Hardware. Bought a box of 100 for $28. Josh

Justin Reagan
Both Mcmaster-Carr and bolt depot have the right sizes of both G5's and G8's. Just make sure the diameter you're looking at is 1/4" (it will probably have 1/4-20 or 1/4-28 listed). I just checked--both sites have at LEAST up to 6" bolts in 1/4" diameter--both G5 and G8. Also, try www.farmshopstore.com Go to Nuts, bolts and fasteners--usually the first item listed is "Grade 5 Bolts, 3 lb. Bag. you pick sizes." for 5.50 I ended up getting 6 lbs. (about 72 bolts) for $20 or so--shipping included
Justin Reagan
Oh, and at the site I told you about, the shipping (orders up to $200) is a flat $10. So the more you buy, the better deal it is. Justin Reagan
Crotchulla
Yeah I'm looking for the normal 1/4 x 6 or 7. Well maybe I missed something. What else are G5s called? I found out (or atleast it seems to be) the G2s are called zinc coated or something. Does a G5 have any other name? I'm still rather new to bending. And thanks for the site Justin. Justin Reagan
McMaster-carr: Under "Fastening and sealing", choose "Cap Screws", and choose "Cap screws" again. Then click on the Grade you want (Grade 2, 5, or 8). Choose "zinc plated" finish. Choose 1/4"-20 as the diameter (the 1/4"-28 is just finer threaded--a little more expensive--not really needed). Choose your length (6" is the most common). Choose "Partially threaded" under Thread length. Should work. Bolt Depot: Choose "Hex bolts" in menu on left. Choose your grade. Choose 1/4-20. It then lists all the different lengths--whether you want to buy them individually, by the box, or by the BIG box Of course, I still think the farmshopstore.com site is better, at least for G5's Justin Edited July 18, 2006 by Justin Reagan
Crotchulla
Wow, thanks again for all the info. I guess that pretty much puts my question to bed.
Crotchulla
Well something else I just realized. I always search for carriage bolts. That would be why I can't find them. Are those different then other bolts?
Justin Reagan
Carriage bolts are USUALLY fully threaded (easier) and aren't usually available in grades other than 2. For example, Bolt depot has G5 carriage bolts, but the smallest diameter is something like 7/16". I don't think Mcmaster-carr even has graded carriage bolts. If you find a PARTIALLY threaded carriage bolt of the same diameter, length, and grade as a hex bolt, it should be pretty much the same. I've actually only found one place that carries partially threaded carriage bolts, and only in grade 2. I've actually found that 5/16" x 6" carriage bolts are good to bend (speaking of fully threaded, of course). Quite a bit easier than a blue, but harder than a 6" x 1/4" G2 (hex bolt). Haven't bent too many yellows in a while, so can't really compare. One more thing to know when looking for hex bolts. Sometimes their listed as hex bolts, hex screws, cap screws, hex cap screws, among other things. Also, sometimes you have the option, even with hex screws, to choose partially threaded or fully threaded (commonly known as "hex tap bolts" or something similar). Almost everybody bends partially threaded. Justin Reagan Edited July 19, 2006 by Justin Reagan
Crotchulla
Geez Justin, you're a wealth of knowledge. I've been bending 5/16 partial threaded carriage bolts from 7" down to 5.5". Now I can bend yellows without much effort, but have only kinked a blue. I was kinda sore so that'll be my excuse this time. Blue will fall before the end of the month. antarath
My problem (as mentioned in another thread) is that we only have grades like 2.4, 8.8 and so on. Bit another guy here helped me and found out that 8.8 is equivalent to grade 5. But I'm still wondering what grade that damn carriagebolt in my gallery is hehe It was alot harder than the blue
Justin Reagan
I'd like to try some of that metric stuff (for a little more variety), but everything I find around here is really, really short. Nothing the right length. Justin Edited July 20, 2006 by Justin Reagan
