gripuru
I want to know how Slim perform this feat (the photo is in www.functionalhandstrength.com and in articles, Barbells, Bent Horseshoes and Sledge Hammers) the photo is the second one starting from the left. Also i want if someone knows with what weight does he perform it. There is a video on cyberpump of Big Steve that he leverege two slegehammers, perhaps Slim perform it that way. I dont know. Best wishes for all.
TelegraphKey
2 sledgehammers were on the floor, either lying completely flat or standing on their heads, I'm still not sure. If they were completley flat, he knelt down between them, grabbed the ends of the handles, and stood up with them, so now they were at his side, both parallel to the floor. Then he raises his arms like a front lateral shoulder raise. Arms fully straight & completely extended out in front, he raises his hands so they're the same level as his face/head. The sledgehammers are now standing completely straight up & down, hammer heads at the top. Then, bending at the wrist only, he lowers both hammer heads down to his face. One flat end of each hammer head touches his face. Then, still bending only at the wrist, he raises the hammer heads back up until they are straight up & down again. He did this on video with 28 lb. hammers*, for a total of 56 lbs. Anecdotally, it's claimed he has done as much as 31.5 lb hammers for a total of 63 lbs. If you've never done this before, the first time you try it with one hand, you very likely won't be able to do 8 lbs. this way. The strongest guys I've seen on these boards do maybe 16 lbs, one or two do around 20 lbs -- even then, that's only with ONE hand! I agree with Dennis Rogers: Two hands, with 28-31 (56-63) lbs: That will never be done by anyone else in history, for the rest of time!!! EDIT: (*) - Sledges were 32" long below the heads. He grabbed the handles by the very ends, so the pinky side of the hand is just on the very bottom edge of the 32" handle. P.S. I just saw some photos of that dude. He is huge. Not huge like Wade Gillingham huge, but his nickname "Slim" always made me think he was sort of skinny. Not so. He's a big, tall, bad-ass cowboy-looking s.o.b. Those hands would knock the crap out of just about anyone on earth. Wayne
TelegraphKey, your mixed up just a little bit. the hammers start lying down on the ground, he kneels down and grabs the ends of the handles, which are 31'' long by the way, and makes the hammers stand up straight. this may be hard to picture.... the ends of the handles never leave the ground, the heads are just going from the ground to straight up in the air... or the hammers themselves are going from horizontal to verticle. after this he stands up with them and does a traditional lever down to his head and back up again. the hammers he uses for his record are not 2 individual hammers, they are cross braced together and the combined weight is 56 pounds. at the end of his dvd it states that 56 was not his best effort, but he had performed this lift in the 65 - 70 pound range. TelegraphKey
Holy crap, he makes them stand up on end on the ground? Wow, that's insane. I saw a website, forget the name, it's from a man who likes to use the weaver stick. He wrote that he met Farman once in 1998 at a strongman event. It was in that article that I read you are supposed to (Farman did) elevate his hands to level with his face, so that when you lower the sledges down to your face, they are actually parallel. Also, I'm pretty sure I read there that man said the handles were 32". But I agree that 31" "ought" to be the standard. I'm going to have to get the Slim "Hammerman" DVD & watch all this for myself. EDIT: I found the article I mentioned. It's by Tom Black, who met Farman in 1998. http://bigsteel.iwarp.com/Articles2/HammerMan.html I must emphasize that in order for an overhead sledgehammer lift to be considered strict the hand must be held up at least as high as your head. Below that point, the torque is significantly reduced Edited June 30, 2006 by TelegraphKey Quote Jim Starr 2008 no injury Rep 2.5 bend Blue Formulator Ext 10x20/Flex 10x60 strict OH Lever 12 lb Lever wrist curl 10 lb 1H Plate Wrist Curl-metal:(R 5*33/L 3*33)-plastic:(R 1*35) Hex Block >40 Blob50? Bob Lipinski
I have heard the handles were 31 from several sources. The front lever lift has to be seen to really understand it. Quote US Handstrength

Sybersnott
He did this in front of an audience @ the AOBS. He looked around for someone to pick on, he looked over and pointed at Heath and said, "YOU!"
