Finally Found A Place To Buy Steel!

20' of 1/2" HRS for about $7 from a local fabrication company. As long as I can bring in my beefy bolt cutters that I borrowed from my uncle and cut the steel myself. 1/2" HRS is probably their limit. Here's why I need to cut it myself:

(part of the e-mail when I asked them price and then asked about the charge for cutting it into 4' sections)

""""""The cost of one 20' of 1/2" round hr steel is $7.25. We charge $35.00 per hour for labor. Even if you just bought one stick we would have to charge $35.00 for labor to cut into 4' sections. But if you bought more then one stick you could get more pieces cut in that hour labor. Does that make sense? """"""""

So as long as they will let me cut it up myself (I'm sure there will be no problem)

8 miles away. All that searching I've done and it's 8 miles away.

Ain't that the TRUTH? Searching all your life and it is outside your door and knocking to get in. What a concept.

why would they have a problem, if they do just take it out into the parking lot and get cutting lol :)

1/2 inch? is that for scrolling?

Enter the zone, feel no pain, dont hold back, and all the power in the world is in your hands...

Yeah, for scrolling. I'm getting tired of only occasionally scrolling some 5/16" or 3/8" steel because it costs too much, and almost never buying any 1/2" because it would completely run me out of money.

I checked today for the 1/2". They were out of stock (not a big place). They said that they could order some and have it in within a day or two, with no extra charge. I guess I should have asked what they had stocked when I first e-mailed them.... Instead I bought 23' of 5/16" HRS for $5. I'm also going to ask if they can get smaller CRS (1/4" and 5/16"--I'm planning ahead). The only CRS they had in stock was some big 1" stuff.

On my next day off, I'm hoping to stock up on 1/2" steel.

Why dont you just order some 1/4 7" stock from FBBC if you cant find any?

That's what I'm going to do if they don't carry CRS. Overall, probably better to order from FBBC than Ironmind. More options, better prices (at least with the 5/16").

The biggest (but not the only) reason I wanted to find a steel place is so I could do some scrolling.

I e-mailed them to be sure, and I was right--no extra charges for ordering.

Here's some prices I got:

20' x 1/2" HRS: 7.25 + tax

20' x 1/4" CRS: 4.50 + tax

20' x 5/16" CRS: 7.02 + tax

No extra charges as long as I cut it myself. I've borrowed some big 36" bolt cutters that will BARELY cut the 1/2" stuff. That means no 5/8" HRS until I find a better way to cut it. Oh well. I think I can get past that for now.

She also let me know that she ordered 100' of the 1/2" HRS, and that it should be there tomorrow. Tomorrow's my day off! I'm still not sure whether to buy 20' or 40'. I'll decide when I get there.

This is great.
