John Beatty Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 My kids got me a bundle of reds so I can get ready to cert. Did one cold yesterday with no warm up at all, which was stupid probably, but cool. Noticed when rolling the bundle around after opening the box, I have a 3/8" red. Anyone else ever get a bonus monster red? Quote I like heavy things.
GatorGrip Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 John that 3/8" might be the prototype for the BLACK NAIL that some of us has jested about Ironmind putting out. They paint the ends red and slide it in random batches of regular 5/16" Red Nails to see if someone notices it or has a happy accident and bends it. I have heard these new ones coming out lately appear to have higher yield strengths How do you compare the newer Reds to some of the older ones? (if you have had the experience with both) Others with opinions on this feel free to comment. KILL THOSE REDS JOHN! Quote SOME OLD SOME NEW CHECK IT OUT! http://www.youtube.com/user/strongmanfeats
neilkaz Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 I hope, that like with the #3 gripper, that since lots of guys are bending Reds, Ironmind doesn't make it more difficult, and thereby cheapen the accomplishments of those who've allready certed. Certainly IM could add a couple tougher nails. One idea would be to have a 6" Red and even a 5" Red and paint the ends a different color. Since 3/8" is rediculously harder then 5/16" another idea would be 11/32" or to custom make a couple of sizes thicker than 5/16". I really hope that IM is not planning on the making the Red cert more difficult, as they have done with the #3 cert. A missguided IM doesn't do our sport any good. Just my opinions .. neilkaz .. twig Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 Didn't they already make it harder by forcing one to use the IM pads? Quote Be nice until it's time to not be nice-Patrick Swayze, Dalton, Raodhose. R.I.P.
GatorGrip Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 The Black Nail is just a running joke but it was said that Randy Strossen would not put out any other nails, somebody said something about liability but this could have been the rumor mill. You're right the IM (Blue) Pads make it hard enough. Quote SOME OLD SOME NEW CHECK IT OUT! http://www.youtube.com/user/strongmanfeats

Just my opinions .. neilkaz .. ← Neil, Ironmind has already made the Red cert more difficult. The old rules let you use leather or whatever you wanted. The new rules state that you can only use the blue "pooptackular" ironmind rags!!!! This really sucks since the ironmind pads offer little to no protection. John, Are you bending Red's with the Blue Ironmind Pads ? Quote
Clay Edgin Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 The Black Nail is just a running joke but it was said that Randy Strossen would not put out any other nails, somebody said something about liability but this could have been the rumor mill. You're right the IM (Blue) Pads make it hard enough. ← When I spoke with Randy last July (2004) he said he said "probably" when I asked him whether Ironmind would come out with a tougher nail. This was before the rule change to only using the cordura pads, so my assumption is that this rule change satisfied the need to make the bending cert more challenging and thus eliminating the need for a tougher bar. I think when a couple dozen people are bending sub 6" reds with cordura, the need for a tougher bar from Ironmind might be real. John, a red with no warmup is pretty sweet dude. What style are you using to bend them? Quote
Dude Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 (edited) I love the IM pads, I've had very little problems bending with them. Think once you use them for awhile its no problem. Would rather see a harder/shorter nail come out instead of changing how to bend the nail. More of a reflection of strength than of adaptation imo. btw great bending John Edited December 27, 2005 by Dude Quote Name:Ron 2006 Goals: Grand Bastard MM3

What style are you using to bend them? ← Travis- I'm using the leather Greg gave me at the BBB. Meant to try the Cordure pads yesterday, but they weren't in the shop & I was running out if time after Strongman training, so I just hit the red with the leathers. Clay- I bend DO. I can't really fool around with too many warmups, the heel of my right palm (the spot that takes the brunt of the crushdown pressure) is giving me a good bit of pain on the hard stuff. If I hit a few bends before the big one, it hurts enough that I kind of want to not go full out. And I've got a fairly high tolerance for pain. Otherwise, thanks for the support, guys! I'm hoping to cert at the Arnold in March. Quote I like heavy things.

Muscle Turtle Posted December 28, 2005 Posted December 28, 2005 John, I had that same pain right before my cert... I spent so much time icing my hand and only doing 2 or 3 bends, finally it went away and allowed me to bend and use grippers with a lot more strength! Quote Enter the zone, feel no pain, dont hold back, and all the power in the world is in your hands...
gazza Posted December 28, 2005 Posted December 28, 2005 Nice work John and good luck on the cert. send the 3/8th Monster Red to eric Quote "There he goes. One of gods own prototypes. A high powered mutant of some kind never ever considered for mass production.Too weird to live and too rare to die."
