Question About New No. 3 Grippers (im)

[i'd posted this on the "introduce yourself" thread but didn't know how many people read it. I hope no one minds if I repost here in order to make it more visible.]

Hello. My name is David. I'm returning to the Grip Board after an absence of nearly three years. I was really into the world of gripping from 2001-2002, let it slip, and am now hoping to return to my immediate goal of closing the IM No. 3. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I haven't lost much strength in the three years. I attribute this to being a pretty dedicated powerlifter, I suppose -- hand strength never really goes away when you're doing heavy deadlifts and rack pulls. I also do a lot of Rolling Thunder work, pinching (with 25s and a loading pin), and negatives and holds with a Hammer Strength grip machine.

My immediate goal/problem: I had reached the point in 2002 where I was able to "click" my IM No. 3 together on 2 or 3 occasions, but I never was able to meet up with the IM rep to certify (we lived too far apart). I hope that I can be at this point again fairly quickly (perhaps 2-4 months). However, I've heard from friends who have the new 2005 version of the IM Nos. 2 & 3 that my own 2 and 3 are weaker in comparison, a fact seemingly supported by posts on this board. I'm thinking of ordering a new IM No. 3 so my close -- when it comes -- will be seen as more legitimate.

What do you guys think? Should I buy a new No. 3 and work towards certifying on that? Or should I work on the No. 3 I have and try to make that official? To be honest, I'm leaning towards the former. In my own mind, closing the No. 3 I have just won't seem like an accomplishment knowing that the new ones are tougher.

I've got some bad news for ya: I wish you had certified when you did. Why?... because there is a rule change now in the cert process that makes the cert a bit more difficult but not impossible.

And yes, the newer #3's are a lot harder than the ones of 2002. How far away are you now on your #3?

Thanks for the reply, Sybersnott.

What's the specific cert change you're referring to? I read through my new Ironmind catalogue, read the rules, and didn't notice anything radically new.

Right now, I'm about 1/4 inch away. Like I said, that's after only one week back trying it. But I also know 1/4 inch is an eternity in grip terms, which is why I was thinking of getting a new one and starting fresh.

P.S. Sorry for the double topic posting -- I don't know what happened. :(

Credit Card Set.You must pass a credit card "longwise up" through the handles and close it w/o any aid from the opposite hand.Basicly No-Setting it.

Try again slick, it is short side up, not long ways. A credit card is almost 3.5" long, so long ways would be impossible on almost every gripper made.

Oh, OK. I never set my grippers anyway. I don't think I'll have to adapt too much.

[on edit: I didn't even know "setting" was once legal; heck, I didn't know what setting was until I read over the board yesterday. LOL]

out this time, but future use of F bombs could result in sterner discipline. Thanks.

I was just making a reply, I didn't mean anything. I'm sorry you are not mature enough to handle making a decent reply. As for the hotdog/hamburger comment, not sure bout that.

The "100" ways to explain it. Well, take the short side of a credit card and place it in the handles. How's that??

As for being a guru, I am not but I know more than you do, slick. :)

Oldtime:

Thanks for the video. As I suspected, I've never used a closer-than-credit-card set. I just grabbed the gripper and squeezed. A quick check with my No. 2 confirms that my start is still well outside the width of a credit card.

Thanks, neilkaz.

That's basically what my frugal wife suggested: keep my old No. 3, just rename it my "2.5" and stay humble if/when I finally close it again 'cause you can always buy a stronger No. 3 later.

Nice thing is I've got a PDA gripper from 2002(?) marked "363" that my friend who uses the new IM grippers tells me is just a little over the strength of his No. 2. So I have a No. 2-equivalent gripper that I can I can close for reps, and an old No. 2 that I can use for warm-ups.

I think you have grossly mis-interpreted Heath's comment.

Michael it's time to stop the pointless flaming and pay some respect where it is most certainly due.

Heath's into D&D? I never knew....now I simply must call him and we can talk about all the intricacies of 7th level ward spells.....instead of all this how to get stronger talk......

I tell you what, slick, you can apologize to Heath and everybody will forget about that nasty little outburst.

Ok, I am full of myself and rude, you are correct. I don't know what the hell you are talking about with Dungeons and Dragons. Maybe when you go hang out with the junior high kids you all play that stuff, personally I don't know anything about it. Does your mommy know you are on the internet using computer karate and being a tough guy?

You outbursts are amusing, please do it again. You can also call me names, that is cool, slick.........

Michael that sounded dangerously pre-school.

And if you have a dispute as to what Heath does or doesn't know, look under his avitar. Compare it to your signature.
