EricMilfeld
I'm thinking about setting a laser at the required 2" height from the floor, aligned with the v-bar's plates, which would then shine on the wall when the bar is lifted to the legal height. I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work. My wife, Sandy, happens to have a laser pointer, used for pointing out astronomical bodies. Maybe I'll snatch it for The Show of Hands. com202
That sounds like a great idea. There would be no doubt about hitting the 2" mark. If you need to borrow another laser I've got one, but I bet I would win the event since its in my Glock. Jason \\m//
gazza
Excellent idea Eric.
jimwylie1
You'd need to make sure it was set up so that it didn't allow for the front end to be above 2" while the back was still below 2".
Jedd Johnson
It could work. Have you seen the set-up we use at GGC? Pretty user friendly, actually. Good luck, and let us know how it works bro. -Jedd-
Scott Styles
I think this is a brilliant idea. I wonder if you could get something for the laser to shine on and trigger a noise when the weights get high enough? I'm thinking of those electronics eyes they have at places like k-mart that beep at you if you step through the beam. I wonder if they make something that does a reverse of that, beeps when the beam is complete?

Zakath
I think it's a great idea, but you would probably need at least 2 lasers so you can eliminate any angling of the weights going through the judgement.
Bob Lipinski
That is what I am going to do for the next vbar I judge! Was going to do it at this one, but had car trouble and my car was at the shop with the laser in it during the contest. Zakath is right, 2 lasers would be needed, but I think 2 would cover any sort of tilt.

Mikael Siversson
One laser beam would certainly not be enough. You would need two set in a cross-fire position. When I lift the lowest point will be at the lateral edges of the plates, not in the front, center or in the back.
EricMilfeld
I hadn't considered the possibility of lateral tilt. So yes, two lasers would be needed, with two sets of eyes watching the lasers. I don't know. Maybe I'll just plop a 2" board on the ground and situate a judge flat on his belly to check for clearance. Of course Jedd's setup was pretty damn awesome. Just a bit impractical for me, at this contest anyways.
Dude
What kind of setup was that @ the GGC? Any pics
EricMilfeld
How has the v-bar height been measured at other contests? Any other ideas for for measuring the 2", when the bar is set at floor level (not up on a platform)?

steelbiceps
For such a specific use, you might not find a ready-to-go product. You could probably use this hobbyist kit: http://www.gibsonteched.net/R-LTS1.html Instead of two lasers you could reflect one back and forth a couple times, then just have one sensor at the end of the path and one alarm to listen for (or one dot to look for if someone is watching). Or put a small, bright light two inches off of the floor and watch for the shadow of the weights to go above a line two inches up on the wall.
