Number Ten Ox
Tried to see where I was @ yesterday with one finger lifts. Started w/ not quite enough weight. Between 4 fingers on each hand I ended up doing about 40 singles trying to find the right weight for each digit. My back is SO sore. And my fingers are a little bit tired as well, fun lift. TelegraphKey
Do you mean single finger deadlifts? Like Goerner finger deadlifts?
Number Ten Ox
Yes, single finger. I used a piece of webbing wrapped around my 2nd joint.
TelegraphKey
What weights did you work up to? I started doing finger deadlifts in a rack just a couple/few weeks ago. Pulling from above the knees just to get an idea of how much my fingers can hold. My fingers hurt WAY before my back hurts on these, since the weight is very submaximal for me of my max deadlift. I find I can't do a single finger DL with my index finger at all. I can barely do them with either my ring finger or my pinky. I CAN do them with my middle finger best of all. So I've been doing 3 types of finger DL's: 2-finger: Index + Middle 1-finger: Middle only 2-finger: Ring + Pinky All mixed grip (one overhand, one underhand) (but no thumb), all partial pulls from just above knees By doing these 3 types, 2-2 fingers plus 1 middle finger, I do approximately the same weight in all 3. I do the 2-finger Index+Middle as a warm-up for the Single-Middle-finger. So far I've worked up to 225 lbs. (Goerner did 302 lbs, and David Horne, a gripboard member/legend, did 403 lbs., middle finger) Edited December 13, 2005 by TelegraphKey
Number Ten Ox
I just used a home made loading pin and did one finger, one hand @ a time. Pinky only got to 65. Ring and pointer 85. Middle I did first, don't know how much being fresh had to do with it but I got up to 115. I started around the 45# range and worked up. Didn't think such small weight would work my back but... I'll start with weight closer to 110 next time and see if I can up it a bit... Also to clarify, the webbing is not on the Joint itself but centered on the middle Phalangee, between the two finger joints. I'll have to try a barbell some day. TelegraphKey
Oh, yeah, the IM R-Ring O-ring thing. I plan to order 2 of those in the next month so I can do farmer's walks with them. They are advertised as specifically built for finger lifts. (I imagine I might be able to do single-finger lifts with those, since they're smaller diameter than a barbell.) I am curious to see how much they trash my fingers, and back!, when I start doing deadlifts & farmer's walks with them. They look pretty nasty on the fingers, actually. Do they "cut" into your fingers at all? (Does the web help for that?) BTW, the lifts you mentioned, Are those all for ONE hand? That is, when you say "115 on the middle finger," do you mean just in one hand, or in 2 hands? For mine, I was talking about double-handed, finger DL's -- both hands, middle fingers of each hand, etc. Edited December 13, 2005 by TelegraphKey
Number Ten Ox
Yes, just ONE hand, ONE finger. I actaully didn't use a ring though, just a piece of 1" wide webbing looped through the loading pin and my finger. Think eagle loops but just one finger on the middle part of your finger. (Middle Phalangee) I better get a camera for Christmas.
David Horne
An olympic barbell is far harder than webbing as the finger is so open compared to a closed/clenched finger with the webbing. Have a go and feel. David
Number Ten Ox
Yes, I would imagine, hopfully if I've been a good boy this year santa will bring me one! I have also tried placing the webbing over my first finger pad (Distal phalanx)) and it's a whole new world. Very dangerous feeling. When I get a little more comfortable I will train it a bit more as well as the Barbell.
TelegraphKey
I was thinking today that the reason your back was sore might be because you did so many reps/sets finding out your max for each finger. Like I said, I do 3 types of finger lifts, (Index+Middle, Middle only, and Ring+Pinky). I warm up at same weight until hitting peak, so that's 3 sets (X1 rep) per weight. I use mixed grip, alternating hand position each set, so one set might have left-hand overhand, right-hand underhand, next set opposite. Anyway, today I hit my limit for both Middle-finger-only and Ring/Pinky, at 225. Just couldn't do 245. Plus, my right Middle finger started to ache in a bad way,at the base into the hand, so I backed off so I could use it the rest of my workout. But for the 2-finger Index+Middle lift, I got all the way up to 335! Still, these are the main fingers for all handlifts, so perhaps I actually should be able to do more.
