mindovermatter
Question: I've currently closed three super masters and have been able to close a sm for about 31/2 weeks and it seems like i don't even come close to the #3 i get closer than parallel but i know the last quarter inch or so is the hardest, The sm is 265 and the #3 is 280( correct me if im wrong) i think i should atleast be getting a little closer i mean its only 15 pounds or so(depending on the gripper) How long did it take some of you #3 closers, or people who get insanely close........ to get from the super master to to the #3 or from the #2 to the #3. Am i just progressing slow? Edited December 12, 2005 by mindovermatter
bencrush
It took me about 3 years or so from the #2 to the #3. And that's 3 years for a first time #3 close. Not 3 years until closing it all the time. It was probably closer to 4 years before I became consistent with the #3 close. It may very well take you the same amount of time...but probably not. Sounds like you're focused and training hard. I'm just telling you not to expect the #3 close to fit under any neat little timeline. It will come when you're strong enough. And not a second before. Keep pounding away.

Soilworker
Kev, first of all, you are doing very well. Don't worry if you are progressing too slow or too fast. Patience. The SM is 265lbs and the #3 is 280lbs? Who cares? If you can't close it then you can't close it. It means that you have to work at it. Besides, those poundage ratings are to be taken with a dumptruck full of salt. As for me, I got the #2 in November I think last year, and closed the #3 for the first time in April, so 5 months. stranger
TOOK ME ABOUT 4-5 MONTHS AND THE #4 SHOULD COME IN LIKE A WEEK (HAHAHAHAHA)
rying
It took 4 months from my first #2 close to shutting the SM. That's when the gains slowed big-time.That was over a year ago and I have yet to close the #3. My best attempts on the #3 since (during periods of gripper specialization--KTA) have been around 1/8". You have to realize that as you approach your potential, the gains will slow. Lately I've been focusing on "other things" and am just barely maintaining my ability to close the SM. You can't be at your peak on everything all the time when you're near your limits. Performances will wave up and down. Train grippers hard for awhile, hit a PR. Then back off or focus on something else. You might have to take a couple steps back when you hit grippers hard again, but you can still work up to a new PR. This is the secret to making gains when you're advanced and it takes time.

Not 3 years until closing it all the time. It was probably closer to 4 years before I became consistent with the #3 close. ← Does anyone know of anyone who slogged away at closing the #3 longer than this, after closing the #2? I first closed the #2 in summer of 2000, and I am still working on the #3. My 2004 #3 is down to around 1/4 inch now. This could be a new record for me to shoot for: The Patience and Perseverance Award. You will get the #3 if you stick to it. If you give up, it won't happen. Listen to Ben. You are doing great. DuTCH
Ben sure is patient, butHubgeezer, you have to receive an award, no doubt! Took me 5 months to the #3.
climber511
I don't remember exactly when I bought my grippers, probably about the same time Hubgeezer did. I opened them up, closed the #1, opened the #2, closed it, opened the #3 - down to probably 3/8" or so. And so far - I still can't close it. I can do mine in a choker set out at 1 3/4" but I can't set it and get that same hand position yet - I'm close but not yet. So I guess I'm in competition with you Mike on this one. I hope I lose! My goal is to be the oldest to close it - well, I keep getting older but at some point, I need to close this thing. I suppose I should have trained it but I just don't like gripper training. This winter I've actually started working them so we'll see what happens.
Geo
Probably just around a year or just under. However CC setting the thing is another matter. I first closed the 3 in Feb of this year, have been trying to get the CC close since! At the moment the close is quick up until the last 3mm then... Like Ben said, dont try and put a timescale on it. Some people take longer than others (like me ). As long as you are working hard and making gains then thats good and keep going. I think I remember someone saying here that Joe Kinney closed the 4 in 2 years or so .

smp76
Probably took me the better part of a year. Too much too fast when I started in the grip game, no plan, no idea how my body would react just balls out stupidity, Not much has changed... -Sean
Dude
Got the grippers last January and could close the #2 but took me until at least March-April to close my #3 I believe. It was after I was done with KTA. The KTA was the most structured thing I've done so far with grip and it paid off in dividends. As long as you work hard you'll get it. burkhardmacht
- 7 month from the 2# to the 3# - 6 weeks from not being able to close the 1# (and no grip training at all) to the 2# close

Cunny
Can't remember when I first closed the 2 but must have been around 3 years ago or more and still not closed the #3 although I did lay off it for a while due to an injury.

Mikael Siversson
Closed an average #2 first time I tried grippers but that was after a full year of training with an Ivanko SG. About six months after this I closed an easy #3 under optimal conditions (i.e., between sets of squats). Took me another four years to consistently close an easy BBE with a slightly wider than parallel set under sub-optimal conditions (no squats etc. as warm up). Never specialized on grippers though. mt-tom
It took me about 3 years between the #2 and #3. Had I found the Gripboard and KTA sooner, I think I could have cut that time down tremendously - like a year or so. I was not training very smart. porkchop
I closed for the first time: IM Trainer and IM #1 on February 26, 2005 IM #2 on May 7, 2005 BBSM on June 22, 2005 IM #3 on September 20, 2005 I'm closing in on the Elite. I have about 1/8" to go on a good night with a MMS. I didn't follow KTA by the book. I bought it and read up on it, used most of the techniques but had a hard time with the volume so I toned it down a lot to suit my tolerance. With hard work and dedication, the #3 will fall for you. Do not rush it. Listen to your body and rest when it says you need rest. Push harder when you think you can do so without causing injury and back off when you feel like you have over trained or are approaching that limit. pc
