Pryderi
Hey everyone. New to the forum here, and been browsing several of the posts/articles the last couple of days. I'd like to get the community's opinion on this setup as a alternative to the "blob." If I had a dig. camera I'd just post a pic, so please bear with my description (though i'm sure this method has been used by a few of you already). Taking a standard adjustable dumbell handle or 18-24 inch pipe w/ hose fittings, fix a 2 1/2 or 5 lb plate towards the end of one side of the handle and load the other end with x amount of weight. The 2 1/2 or 5 lb plate would be your gripping point. The device would look similar to the following: -|---||||- I've also experimented with just griping one side of a fixed dumbell, as opposed to the detached dumbell head by itself. Kurt Lane
makes sence, although weight wouldent be balanced and you cant do fun things like cleans, snatches, toss.
Pryderi
The weight seems balanced (when gripped around the outer rim of the 2 1/2 plate with i guess an "eagle" or "tiger" claw would be the best description - pinch grip) Think similar to the pinch-style hub gripper sold by ironmind (http://www6.mailordercentral.com/ironmind/prodinfo.asp?number=1244) and a loading pin to get the idea of how i'm gripping this device on the 2 1/2 and 5lb plates. I've only been attempting holds for time currently. Tosses do not seem practical with this setup (the 1-2'' of protruding handle required to get the collar on the handle would most likely hit your palm before you could get ahold of the plate...would take some skill/luck), and clean/snatches would probably put too much strain on the wrist though I am going to try it out when I am ready to advance beyond my current routine.
