timster
Hey guys. I started working on grip about 4 months ago, and when I got the #1 I could not get within a 1/4 inch of it. I gave it everything I got, then bought the KTA program and slammed it. I have since shaved down the #1 and purchased the #2 and #3. I have done 2 cycles of the KTA program, as tough as it is, but I have a very deep soreness on the top my hands, at the point where the wrist joins the hand, on both hands... It is better than soreness from lifting weights when you are sore just moving. This soreness only comes when gripping hard, but it is very deep. May I continue gripping or should I take some more time off?
John Wood
Take time off. Work on stretching and flexibility work in the meantime.
timster
Hi John. I am less than 1/16 of an inch away from the #2, and I am so close I can feel it. A hair away from shutting the #2, so I know I am getting a bit excited. Thanks, I will rest for a week.
timster
Hi John.I am less than 1/16 of an inch away from the #2, and I am so close I can feel it. A hair away from shutting the #2, so I know I am getting a bit excited. Thanks, I will rest for a week. ← Well, I couldn't rest for a week, so I took a day off and then did 20lb block weights using only my pinky and ring fingers like on Bender's web page... Today, my second day off from grip work, I decided to flip my shaved #1 gripper upside down and grip it with only my pinky finger, then only the ring finger to strengthen them... I discovered that my soreness is very very deep but is in my middle and index fingers only because I have not been utilizing my pinky/ring fingers too much at all... Anyways, I feel more rested and will do more block weights and grippers, but only with my pinky/ring fingers for a few more days... It is almost as if my hands are separated in two; I can take a break off of full gripping and just use the little fingers... Am I on the right track or is this a dumb idea? I tend to think I am on the right idea, but I have only been gripping for 4 months. Thanks.
SqeezeMasterFlash
Sounds like a good plan to me. Anytime you can train a different part of your grip to get past an injury is a smart idea. You can continue to improve and heal at the same time.

But no, I am not injured at all, which is why I brought up the soreness on the top of my hands; I was just surprised that no one else here has mentioned any soreness on the top of the hands except me. I was hoping it was normal, but it does not go away like muscle soreness does... Tendon soreness? If so how long does that take to go away. My fingers have zero soreness. I have done 2 KTA cycles in a row, so maybe that is it. Thanks.
JasonL
In terms of helping my hands heal is eating a lot of pinapple and papaya. Using Aloe on my hands throughout the day. Usiing Hand Balm at night and covering my hands with gloves and going to sleep. Hot and cold baths for my hands works great as well. MSM powder too. 5xfive
Hey Timster, If you squeeze the bones in your wrist, were the hand meets the wrist.....does it hurt? If you do an exaggerated wave does it hurt? If so say hello to tendenitis......I think. I got a bad case, when I popped my wrist, then went on a tennis rampage. I think I might have the same thing now....'cept for the pain is between my 1st-2nd, 2nd-3rd knuckles on both hands. Only time will tell how fast I recover from this. The wrist injury took damn near 3 month's to be 100%. n8
timster
Thanks Jason for those tips. 5xfive, I researched tendonitis and I am afraid that I must have a mild case of it, at the very least, from doing two full cycles of KTA without a grip base. I am going to have to take it easy until I heal. Tendonitis was the last thing on my mind. Thanks for that great tip, and hope you heal well, too. 5xfive
Good luck! Contrast baths work great for the short term, but rest is the key. n8
asultzer
I just got over the same thing you are describing. Sharp shooting pain between the first and second metacarpals, way down deep and especially on the crush with max or near max effort. I took 4 days off of gripping anything and then threw in some reps on the #1 and shot rotations. Feels good today and crushing strength is right back where it was. Tendonitis is my best guess. Vise
if it healed in 4 days it was not tendonitis. just my 2 cents.
