matonski
I want to start training for the Inch. I'm debating between getting PDA's Ironhorse Inch Dumbell Bar or Atomic Athletic's Thomas Inch Dumbell Trainer. If I get PDA's bar (the polished stainless steel version) combined with their GINCS to keep the plates from rolling, the prices end up being pretty similar. My hesitation with AA's product is that if it isn't completely filled, the rolling tendency of the bar will be diminished. My hesitation with PDA's product is that I won't be lifting the bar from the exact same height as the actual inch dumbell. Any comments/suggestions? maidenfan
Well, if I was training for the Inch, I'd just buy a 2.5" DB handle and train with it. Both Lance and John sell cheap, well made db's. Its not the same, but close enough for govt. work.
OldGuy
Make a bar cheaply using plumbing pipe and PVC for the handle.
Revtor
Personally I would go for the Atomic Athletic.. Something about it not being as easy to change weight as a dumbell handle. . and how it looks like the original. Aint cheap, but if youre set on one or the other, Id go for the shotloadable. Its just cooler. and for me, if somethings cooler, Im more inspired to try and lift it. I have a bunch of normal thick dumbell already . . . ~Stv
mossman
alright, im trainging for this as well......im using a 2.5'' DB with plates that dont move, period. personally, if you were going to spend all the money AA wants, i would just buy an INCH replica and deload. deloading has seen some great results around here, and i think it would work just as well for the INCH. Sybersnott
My hesitation with PDA's product is that I won't be lifting the bar from the exact same height as the actual inch dumbell. ← What difference does THAT make?? Lifting it off the ground is lifting it off the ground!
Scott Styles
If the cost of those options is the same, I would buy/make a cheap thick handled dumbell, then buy the inch when I thought I was close. The thing is, once you tire of the inch dumbell, you will have no problem reselling it to get most of your money back. I don't think the same can be said of the other options you present. You can always deload like others have suggested, and the cool factor of having a challenge dumbell has to be considered. Edit - it looks like you are not considering the shipping cost of the inch in your price comparison. I'm pretty sure that is around $100. deaner
To simulate the inch is it better to have a revolving handle to simulate it rolling out of your hand or is a fixed dumbell the same thing as lifting the inch? I was under the impression that the inch was unique because it rolled out of your hand more than a regular dumbell.
MikeP
The reason the inch rolls out of your hand is because the mass is on top and bottom of your hand. A plate loaded bell with tightly fixed plates will mimick this very closely. With a farmers walk or ring handle the weight is totally under you so no spin, this is why so much more weight can be lifted this way vs a dumbbell. I personally would go with the cheapest option for my training bell. A la Oldguy, PVC, or if you weld or know somebody who does you can easy throw together a nice steel one. If you are going to make one, go ahead and make a bar too. I like my 2" and 2 3/8" bars very much. If you were wanting to train for the inch and had to chose, I would go for a DB. Not to hijack a thread or sound like a salesman, but I still have some Inch plate DBs for trade/sell. They are a cheap option and work very well/similar. Take a look. Either way, good luck.
