How many started their grip training in their 40's?? Any COC's over 40?? Can I still become a COC?? How frequently are you working grip nowadays? I am working crush and wrist now...is this best? GOAL: COC #3, tearing decks, phonebooks, MM1 cert! Sorry for so many questions just wanted to get a good thread going about "middle aged" grip training!!?? All feedback is welcome!! pdoire
Wow, Thats what I need to hear..I have read many of your posts..and learned a lot from your wisdom. You consider yourself to have had old timers strength in your hands to start with. Is that what motivated you to continue to increase it? How many times a week do you work crush alone? I am trying 3x week..but want to make sure I allow enough recovery time.
Chuckie B.
I started grip training at 48 and will be 52 on 10/24. It's great to have this sport for an obsession!!!
John Wood
Chuckie B. is the real deal. Listen to whatever he has to tell you.
OldGuy
Train crush twice a week as follows. With a gripper you can close, do several singles holding the close. With the gripper you hope to close, squeeze as hard as you can and hold, fighting all the way. Several singles. With a gripper that is a lot more difficult than your target gripper, also squeeze and hold for several singles. Use rotational therapy balls daily. MikeP
How old is Richard Sorin now? And not that any of them started after 40, but how old is Brookfield and Slim? Isn't Slim 70? I know he can kick my ass like a little girl...and he's not shy about telling you he can!

DanH
According to Warren Tetting one can increase handstrenght untill one is in his late 60-ies, early 70-ties!.Handstrenght is the last thing to go, the man says But with age recover/recouperation time increases and so do the risk of injuries, especially if one train heavy negs. I'm 59, started 18 month ago. I do gripper work only every four-to-five days. Its great fun and very addictive. I hope to cert. on a IM #3 in a not too distant future - on a good day I can close one of my average #3. So just keep going - and train hard! Steve B.
I'm 47 and been doing grip stuff for a little over a year.I don't feel real qualified to give grip advice as of yet as i'm still working to close the #3.
Zevich
I hit the double nickel in August. Although I have weight trained since being a boy I only started specific grip training in February. At first grip training was twice a week due to recovery. After a few months I have brought it up to 4 days a week with no problems. In fact it completly stopped arthiritis in my hands. And I thought I was too old to start a new addiction.

mobsterone
David Horne was at his best/strongest in his late thirties - early 40's having announced his intention to retire (at age 41) at the recent European Grip Championships. I'm 40 - 4th in the GGC, 4th at the European and 3rd in the British.
Cunny
John Brookfield is looking for a successor over at samsonscroll maybe he is retiring.
MikeP
Damn Snott, I didn't know you were 40. Shoot, Willie Wessels whipped me 3 years ago at NASS Nationals and he was 38 and I was 24 so... He won again this year I heard, that would make him 41? And that is full on strongman. I think, just like young children, we underestimate what we can do when were old. Look at Odd, what is he, 53? I think Dr. Squat hit his biggest at 42 wasnt it?
supersqueeze
I am 43 but I started training my grip at about 38. It is definately harder to make consistent gains as you get older but given enough time progress can be made. If your son gets serious, you will never keep up with the speed of his gains but you can improve. Mike M.
Thaibox
I got my Dad into grip training at 65. He's been lifting for years but now he's into bending and crush.
EricMilfeld
In fact it completly stopped arthiritis in my hands. ← Exciting news! I bet you didn't think that would happen.
jklove41
I'm 63 and have been grip training about 2 years. I can close the #2 with a set on a good day and pinch a pair of 35s. My DL is 440 with a goal of 500. I am 6' and weigh 200. My grip progress seems slow and I can't get comfortable with sessions per week. I've tried KTA and made good progress with it. I'll probably go back to it soon. Ken
Bob Lipinski
My father in law is starting semi-serious grip training at 67. We work out on the hammer strength grip machine together every week, and he does grippers at home. Now I've got him lifting thick DB's with me once a week. Zevich
← Exciting news! I bet you didn't think that would happen. ← You are right Eric. I didn't start grip training to ease the arthiritis - I started just for the fun of it. Couldn't ask for a better side benefit.
