pahulkster
I joined a new gym last night, and they have some York dumbells. I noticed they didn't have any 100's, but they did have a few 90's. I tried just putting my fingers around the top of the dumbell, and only my thumb and middle finger went more than an 1/8" past the edge. I guess I just have smaller hands, but I can't even imagine how I would lift 50lbs with that kind of stretch.
MikeP
Did you put it over the narrow part of the bell (where its stamped 90) or did you put it over the face (like you were trying to pick up a frisbee by stretching your hand around it). If you were trying the face, it takes a very big (or crazy strong, actually both) hand. If you were across the numbers, you may just have really small hands and that sucks but is not the end. You can do alot.
Clay Edgin
Rob V. Vigeant has 7" hands and has given the 50lb blob some airtime. You too can be this freaky! Edited October 6, 2004 by ClayEdgin
supersqueeze
Does Rob also have a 7 inch thumb?
VeGripper
Hey, Pahulkster! Good to see you here (this is Ryan from the VF board!) As was mentioned, grabbing across the face of the DB as if it was standing on end is one hell of a feat - I can barely get the last joint of my fingers and thumb on my 37.5 blob, and the 50, there's no way in hell. The flat part is preferred for the pinch, to try it at that point and see what happens for grip. If all else fails, get some used hex DBs, start with something lighter and smaller like 25 lb. blocks from a 50 cut in half, and work your way up from there. Pinching went up quickly for me, but I had to start way low to get the feel for it and build the strength to move some fair weight. Also, you never know if someone here occasionally has some smaller blobs for sale, so check back and if you can get your hands on one, even as low as 27.5 lbs, get one and start with that since you can always tape additional weight on until you find a heavier one. Hope this helps!
The Mac
When it comes to Blob lifting, handspan has more relevance than hand length, since handspan takes into account thumb length.

Span is more relevant than length in many grip feats than length, due as you said to the thumb length factor.
nickr104
i was there at the GGC and saw Rob get the blob up too! it was awesome
smitty
One thing about Rob though is that he has worked with his hands for many years – and he has some of the best forearm development I have seen. Lifting the Blob and picking up 2 – 45’s with 2 fingers is crazy with 7” hands but he has done it….But the key theme in this statement is that hard work and perseverance is required. milkbone
Check out how far Wade Gillingham's hand spans the BLOB in this picture from the Ironmind site. http://www.ironmind.com/ironcms/opencms/sy...wadeblob_lg.jpg
pahulkster
Ahh, good deal. I thought you had to grab it across the top! I couldn't even imagine how this was possible. Doing it across the numbers is still quite a feat, though. This is a relief.

Hell, I can't pull my 37.5 alone without having to do a little something to keep it dry, but a 50 lb. that looks smooth as butter without any chalk...damn, that's gotta be tough! milkbone
I have cleaned my 37.5 pounder with alcohol before. I know some people lift the Rolling Thunder without chalk also, just very clean.

I'm not sure if any of you are musicians, but I can stretch from the 5th to 12th fret on my guitars pretty easily. That is a big stretch to most people. VeGripper ← I've got a 40lb blob that's ridiculously smooth and slick. With blobs like that you have to keep them clean and shinny. Chalk makes them harder to lift.
