Here's an announcement from the makers of this forum software. What's everyone think?

========================

Invision Power Services, Inc. is pleased to announce the Community Blog plugin for Invision Power Board.

The Community Blogging system will allow you to create a list of members with a Blog. Based on authorization the member can link to an external Blog, or create a hosted Blog. The administrator can define which usergroups can See, Create, Create hosted and Moderate the Blogs.

Current and Planned Features:

- Entry comments

- Users can customize the look of the Blog (viewmode, blocksposition, custom content blocks)

- Calendar, Last entries content blocks (which the user can enable/disable).

- Custom Content Blocks (users can add content blocks containing user defined content)

- Posting entries as draft to be published later.

- Assign Moderators to the Blogging system.

- Search the Blog Entries on keywords.

- View the history of the Blog.

- Locking of Entries.

- Private Blogs (only the Blog owner can see it).

- RSS feeds.

- Categories (allow the user to define categories and asign entries to them; the user can filter on a category)

- About me feature (it will display some member information with statistics and content the member defined)

The Community Blog plugin will be a low-cost addition to Invision Power Board license holders. We will also be offering IPS Forum Hosting customers the option of adding the Blog software to their hosted communities.

We expect the first public release to be available by mid-November 2004. Keep an eye out for updates until then!

My question would be, what does the blog system offer that we don't already have in the training logs available in the Workout report forum?

I have no experience with blogs, so it's an honest question.

Looked thru' the provided link. Still unsure what major advantages are offered over the current setup?

Better presentation and format.

Specific entries and specific comments on entries. Now it's all serial in this board format.

Archiving specific entries.

For example. You post a workout:

New PR's all Around

People provide feedback on that specific entry.

To find it in the current format would be difficult and it's all in a series in your posts.

Searching specifically on someone's log entries only. Not the whole board or sifting through all the members posts.

Setting categories for your entries. People often make posts on past history, what they like to do besides training, etc. This enables them to post it all in one place and make separate entries based on the content rather than mixing.

Just a few off the top of my head.

Would the blogs be accessible by non-members of the gripboard? Doesn't matter to me either way, just curious. Although there is less likely to be comment spam if it's accessible only by members.

I'm up for the addition of blogs, if the blogging software is decent. I've tried some free blogging software and didn't like it much. Of course, I didn't have much of a topic either, so there was nothing to write about.

If a blogger can categorize entries (grip, diet, politics, etc) that's a big plus.

How customizable is the look of the blog?

I believe it can.

I also believe it is customizable for the look.

It would be only accessible to members but it could be made private as well.

The message board is already like a group weblog. When one starts a new thread, they start a new topic. If you want to read a specific person's information on their workouts or personal thoughts, you can do a search on their user name and the appropriate forum.

Given, this I think the learning curve may be to high. The features described are useful when working with massive amounts of information. 99% of the members here do not generate enough information to warrant taking the time to understand them.

To my understanding, the primary purpose of a weblog is to give everyone you know the opportunity to read up on your days on their time. So when you actually talk, it can be about the implications of events rather than the events themselves. If someone was to blog like this, I'm not sure why they would keep it on a lifting message board.
