Pinch gripping

In a pinch gripping competition, how high does one have to lift the plates? Is it like a deadlift or is there a given height (in inches or centimetres) that must be exceeded?

Here is USAWA rule, word for word

A solid, smooth metal surface on both outward facing sides will be used. The width of the object to be gripped will be between 2 1/4 and 2 1/2 inches. A special bar to hold the plates tightly together is allowed upon approval by the chief referee. The weight will be lifted by gripping the top of the weight and standing erect with the knees straight until the referee's command. The lift will not end until the referree has determined that the weight is held firmly in the lifter's grip.

Based on the USAWA figures, an "average" width would be 60 mm (average of 2 1/2 -2 1/4 inches). I am practising my pinch gripp using two plates with a combined width of approximately 67-69 mm (the inner edges are not perfectly even). Does anyone have an idea how much such an increase in width (11-15 %) would effect the amount of weight that one could pinch? This has turned into my favourite exercise.

Well today StrongerthanArne defeated Arne in a three-event grip competition at our local gym. Please try not to laugh at our pathetic results (we are already being laughed at on a regular basis by our not so very understanding wives).

Event 1 was strap holds with the right hand CoC #2 (1.25 kg weight).

1. StrongerthanArne  14 sek.

2. Arne  5 sek.

3. Mr X  9 sek (CoC #T).

Event 2 was one arm deadlift using a revolving powerlifting bar.

1. Arne 190 kg (95 right + 95 left)

2. StrongerthanArne 182.5 kg  (97.5 right + 85 left)

3. Mr X  175 kg  (90 right + 85 left)

Event 3 was pinch gripping (with two hands) two 25 kg plates with extra weight attached to a bar connecting the two big plates. The width of the two plates is 2 11/16. These plates are a pain to lift as the width of each one of them is slightly greater at the hub than it is along the rim.

1. StrongerthanArne 56.2 kg

2. Mr X 51.6 kg

3. Arne 0 kg (failed to lift the starting weight of 50.5 kg.

So there you are, StrongerthanArne is stronger than Arne.

Our crushing grip is obviously much better than the other two measures of hand strength (holding and pinching), which is not surprising considering that we have not practiced the other two at all.

Cheers

Mikael S.
