Nick, Gorilla, Rog, David, and the crew of plate curlers:

What are your suggestions for starting out with this exercise?  And progression?  Technique?  Errors that could cause injury?

Thanks,

Bill

Bill,

Start with a small disc and get used to it by doing reps. Add weight on a short loading bar fastened through the middle.

Remember to lock your wrist, this area will strengthen, and push through your finger tips. Do some plate wrist curls as well, these help.

I also found that it takes a few weeks for the skin to toughen up on the thumb were the disc rim digs in. Once this has then your ready to start pushing it a bit more.

I found it best doing this exercise twice a week. Also remember to do some other curls as well. you don't want to fail because your biceps are not strong enough!

You will get used to it, David

I cant elaborate on Davids expert advice, other than to say experiment with the kind of grip you take on the disc.  I have found it can vary depending on disc width and thumb strength.  I prefer putting the edge of the plate where my fingers join the hand rather than where the calluses are (does that make sence?)

This fun lift will soon show you how good your wrist and thumb strength are!!!
