Kevin, sounds like a great grip competition you put on !

Question:  Are you able to pinch grip 2 45lb plates ?  I ask because of your 2-hand pinch grip of 185 suggests you might be able to.  Also, have you pinched more than 185 in training or with thinner plates ?

I just started the 2-hand versions and do them after my gripper workout. I'm up to 177 lbs and would like to get to 210, a la Warren Lincoln Travis.

Rog,

Yes it was a very good competition, not because I put it on, but because of those that traveled great distances to compete.  Maybe next year you will join us??

No, I am not able to pinch grip two 45 pound plates with one hand.  The most I have done is 195 in training with two hands, I always use the same pair of 45's which are the thinnest I have at 2 3/4 inches.    I have cleared the floor with 205 but could not finish.  I am trying to get some YORK 45's because they are 2 1/4 inches wide.  You cannot simply take your best 2 hand pinch and divide by 2 to estimate what you can do with one hand.  It just doesn't work that way.

I have always considered myself to be relatively weak at pinching and I was surprised that some of the competitors did not do more than my 185.  The width of the plates may have been a factor.  Even Matt Graham who has huge hands only did 150 lbs.

It sounds like you have a good start on the pinching with the 177 lbs.  If you peruse the results of the British Iron Grip results over the years or even our Super Grip's short history, it will give you an idea of what is being done by the competitors in these competitions.

This will be encouraging to some of you.  At the 1991 and 1992 Iron Grip Contest, David Horne did a 2 hand pich lift of 80 kg and 75 kg respectively.  Then in 1993 he did 101 kg. which is fantastic improvement.  Then 110 in 1995,  and 115 kg in 1997, so the improvement continues.  I'm not sure if the width of the plates changed through all these contests but this is remarkable improvement.  Maybe David could add some insight and/or training advice  if he reads this.  This demonstrates just how much progress someone can make with proper training!

Only a few competitors in the British competition have gone over 200 lbs. on this event.  Those being David, Nick,  and  David Elmer.   A 200lb 2 hand pinch is very good in my opinion.

Another interesting comparison is the 2" bar deadlift using a double overhand grip.  In 1998, David and Nick did 160 kg, and 165 kg. respectively at the British Grip Champ's.  This is pretty comparable to our 2nd and 3rd marks at the Super grip this year.  Jason Keen and I both did 355 lbs. or 161 kgs.  My point here is to show how impressive the lift of 540 lbs was by Matt Graham.  However, overall I seriously doubt if Matt could beat David or Nick in a competition like this because it takes tremendous grip strength in all areas.   We will probably find out some day as David and Nick and Elizabeth plan to come over to our competiton.  I'm not especially looking  forward to the ass kicking I'll receive, but really can't wait to meet these guys and Elizabeth too!!!!

Kevin,

What is your best result in the one arm deadlift with a regular (non-hook) grip on a standard powerlifting bar? I now of one guy (a Swedish strongman) how does 130 kg with his right hand and 140 with his left (both lifts with the bar in front of both legs). I don't know how good this is only that it is a lot more than I and most other can manage.

Kevin,

Yes, I can't wait to come over and meet you guys. Don't know about any butt kicking though!

The discs have always been 2" width, because some competitors are juniors and can't get their hands round anything thicker. My progression from 1992 to 1993 was due to a huge amount of training. I increased the intensity and the workload. Sometimes training my grip everyday, and even twice a day on a few occasions. Prior to this, I had relied on my natural grip strength and didn't really do any extra/specialised training. This was also the case when I first picked up the #3. I closed the #2 so easily on my first occasion, and couldn't believe that I couldn't close the #3. I put the gripper away, only bringing it out every so often, and only really started to progress on it when I put a concerted amount of effort over a period of time on it. This worked and still does.

Keep training hard and the results will come.

David

David,

It seems that the pinch is perhaps your strongest lift, yet you (as I have gathered from a previous posting) train this only once a week. Do you feel that once a week is the optimum for you or do you feel that you could have progressed faster had the skin on your  hand allowed you to pinch twice a week or even more often? Personally, I found that I do better by pinching once a week than twice a week.

Mikael,

I would sometimes do a second pinch session, using a towell over the disc to protect my skin, it also made it a lot harder to grip.

I don't know if I would have progressed faster, I doubt it.

Mikael,

My best one hand deadlift with a non hook grip on an olympic bar is 265 for one rep.   That was done recently in training.  Frank Ciavattone has done the most in the USAWA with a little over 300 lbs. if my memory is correct.  Recently the USAWA journal stated that Frank had done 6 reps with 231 lbs. (105 kg.) and it was asked if anyone else could duplicate this feat.  My next training session I did 11 reps with 231 as was reported in the USAWA Strength Journal.  I had a barn full of kids cheering me on while I did this.  I wasn't trying to show Frank up because we are friends.  BUt it is sometimes hard to pass up a challenge.   THis lift is on the menu at the IAWA World Champ's coming up in Scotland in a few weeks.  I expect to have a friendly competition going with Frank at the meet.  Incidentially, this lift is called the one hand Ciavattone lift.

David,

Thanks for the response.  As I suspected, you greatly increased your training committment to these particular lifts.

Kevin,

Thank you for your respons. The Swedish guy who did 140 kg (308 lb) was Mattias Mattisson. I think he jumped 10 kg between attempts so who knows how much he could really lift. We are trying to convince him to participate in the Löddeköpinge Grip Challenge II on the 8 of December (results of Löddeköpinge Grip Challenge I in the next issue of IronGrip). The events in that comp. will be CoC, pinch and Rolling Thunder.

I'm finding out that intensive pinch-grip training is murder on my thumb joints. I've switched to doing it only every other week. Two weeks ago, I maxed out with a pinch/hub lift of a 45-lb Olympic plate with a 2.5 lb plate sitting inside the rim. My right thumb is *still* stiff. LOL.

As far as one-handed deadlifting is concerned, I do better lifting with the bar in front (250 PR), rather than straddling it (225 PR). I can't figure it out, because straddling I can *clear* an Olympic bar from the ground with 275 on it, but I can't straighten it out, whereas with the front stance, it either goes up or it don't -- there's no "clearing" the floor without locking out.

Everyone's different, I guess.

It is a grip competition that we (Arne Persson and myself) are going to do every third month in Löddeköpinge (situated about 30 miles north of Malmö) in southernmost Sweden. The aim is obviously to promote grip training and grip competition. Löddeköpinge Grip Challenge I (held on the 8th of September) saw seven competitors, including two of the Swedish strongmen. The results are comming up in the next issue of the Iron Grip. I asked previously if there was any interest on this board to publish the results here, but David Horne was the only one that was interested.

Mikael,

I am definitely interested in your results and I must of missed your previous post about it.  I look forward to reading the results in Iron Grip!  And I wish you continued success with this competition!

Kevin,

Thanks for your kind remarks. We are hoping to add Mattias Mattison to the list of competitors for the next competition. I wonder what he could manage on the Rolling Thunder that is going to be one of three events (the other two are CoC and pinch), considering that he pulled 140 kg in the one arm deadlift in practice. Strongmen in gerneral seem to be very strong in supporting grip but not allways outstanding in crushing and pinching.
