  1. 1. Should we push the average of Titanium from 175 to 180?

    • YES, make them harder on average!

    • NO, leave Titanium alone.

Unrelated, but is there any precise data on how the depth of filing effects RGC?

Also, is there a limit to how much a gripper can be filed before it becomes less useful for the intended purpose of developing BTR strength?

Thanks!

Good questions. I don’t have precise data about filing, but have lots of practical experience. We use the same jig to file all grippers, but the amount of filing actually varies slightly based on the gripper and construction.

For example, a thicker spring holds the gripper ever so slightly farther away from the back wall. That will show up as slightly deeper filing. Similarly, a shallow mount moves the handle deeper into the cut.

In general the filing service predictably adds 5% to 7% to the strength. It is more likely to be 7% starting at the #2.5 level and going up. This is predictable enough that we have gotten pretty good at hitting requested numbers as long as the original gripper is roughly 5% to 7% below the goal.

Regarding a limit, it is kind of a diminishing return and we do worry about the additional stress placed on the spring. It doesn’t take a ton of filing to get the 5% to 7%.

Resurrecting this thread. We are about to make the pinned Titaniums.

If nothing changes they will still average 175. I'm not really considering making them easier.

The question is: Do I push the average toward 180?

Your thoughts? :)   Maybe I'll turn this into a poll.

Based on the recent trends with the CoC #3.5s, I think 175 is more valuable. The GHP #8 might be closer to 175 on average (in the past year, anyway), but those are also more like 175-180. Not to mention GHPs are getting harder and harder to find these days. Just my opinion, between 170-175 would be the best. So basically same as before.

And this one is totally personal, but a gripper in the low-mid 170s would be a great goal for me. I closed my 165 Cobalt only once and I'd need to get stronger, but a weaker Ti seems much more obtainable than my #3.5 or #8.

Right now, if somebody wants to buy a 170-175 gripper, all the options need some hunting and are potentially expensive: 1.) legacy Ti, 2.) old #3.5, 3.) old #8, 4.) Elite (but those vary in rating so much).

Well, this ended up being decided for us. The shop told us today that Tungsten was done and surprise Titanium is done as well. Turns out I had a typo on the spec sheet and never finalized Titanium yet so they built them at the same specs as Tungsten. Which, has the average rating roughly averaging 180-185 now. So, I guess we'll see how people like them at 180-185!
