Horseshoe bending/Cert training bend:
• Kerckhaert SX7 #2
• Single leather wraps
• No leg pad

"Without question, I'm ready to submit a cert video for the Kerckhaert certification list once again. I recently received a box of shoes I ordered, all of which are SX7'S specifically to train with for this cert. This morning I wrapped up one of them and got it past 180° in a short period of time. This was very pleasing and the next one up will be a certification submission to place a bit higher on the list!"

Kinked bars from a week ago:
• 8~3/8 x 5/16 12L14 CRS
• Single leathers & crush pads

"Here's some bars I finished up today. Despite them all being bent terribly off center, they felt great!"

"A cool discovery"
• Six 19/64 x 7" O-1 drill rod bars
• kinked whenever!
• 1~1/2 wraps

"So... Yesterday evening while checking on my bending stock, I came across 6 pieces of drill rod that kinked and put down so I can finish off on later date. The question is why I didn't complete them! I honestly can't remember but it could have been during a time when I'll take a week or so off from bending and upon returning I must've completely forgotten. In any event I decided to take two of the six bars for a ride and they were very stiff and reluctant to move but that's expected! Some time soon I'll finish off the other four bars along with two lengths of 8~3/8 CRS that I kinked as well, it should be challenging session!"

"A cert video gone wrong"

• Kerckhaert SX7 #2
• Single leathers
• No leg pads

"First off, I'm very happy about this bend .. now for the facts .. I am thee worst at submitting cert videos .. THE WORST!!! As I stated on the video, my intention was to submit this for a higher place on the Kerckhaert certification list on the gripboard by Anton Siden, but after reviewing the playback I noticed that the shoe left the camera frame NUMEROUS times! No bueno .. This however will serve as a reminder to myself to set things up better next time. With that said, I'm very pleased that my training to bend this shoe within the 5 minute time limit has paid off. At one time it took me just over 5 minutes to complete and now I'm breezing through the bend quickly. For now I'll consider this a practice run, but I'll damn sure set things up better the next time!"

"The finishing touches"
• Two 5/16 x 8~3/8 12L14 CRS bars (single IMP's)
• Four 19/64 x 7 O-1 drill rod bars (1~1/2 leathers)
• Double overhand

"Today was a very good bending day. After a good warm up and some stretching, I completed several good bends that I kinked some time ago and there was a good bit left in the tank. This feeling was very rewarding because I've been working on more stamina during volume sessions and it was nice to know that upon finishing up today's training, I had a good two or three more bends in me. I'm very grateful!"

"The tale of two shoes"
• Kerckhaert SX7#2
• Single leathers

"Today's bending session served two purposes. Firstly, I wanted to experiment with the CORRECT camera angle so that the next time I submit a certification video, the darn shoe would actually stay in the camera frame unlike the last time when the shoe was playing peekaboo throughout the whole video! Anyways, I believe I've got it right and the next video submission should be fine. Now on to the second and most significant part of today's training.

Yesterday, @doncummings made reference to the degree of variance within the horseshoes that will be part of this week's steel bending championship which prompted a few changes to be announced. Today's bend expressed just that. The last SX7 I bent was completed in a flash. Today's shoe was a horse of a different color! Not only was it SIGNIFICANTLY tougher overall, the kink and final crush was notably stiff. While I was able to complete the bend in just over 3 minutes, I had to eat my spinach because this was a tough bend! I'm very pleased with today's bend because it reassured me that without question I have total dominance over the SX7 and I plan to make it official soon but I admit that it was a close one today!

"Not worth the reward"
• 6061 T-6 aluminum
• 3/8 x 8~3/8
• Single leathers
• Double overhand

"Around October of last year I played around with what I consider a novelty bend on 6063 aluminum which was soft and offered absolutely nothing in the ways of training but I knew that going in. For a while now I wanted to try 6061 aluminum because through research and being a student of bending I knew it was a tougher metal and I also knew of the inherent risks. I decided to place a small order for few lengths of 6061 T6 Aluminium so I can find out first hand, so here's my take on how this turned out.

Since I knew the risks I decided to wrap up a full 12-inch length of this metal and brace bend it before attempting an unbraced double overhand bend. As the bar moved just past 90°, it snapped. While I should have stopped there, I proceeded forward with my experiment and decided to press forward with a double overhand bend. As I began the bend I couldn't help but to be consumed with what I knew would happen, it was just a matter of when, nonetheless I began the kink. I found it to be rather stiff at the start but got it moving and cautiously proceeded to continue the bend a half inch at a time which is absolutely not what you want to be focused on during a bend! When the ends of the bar were four inches away from each other it snapped loudly and so ended this bending experiment of sorts. Truthfully 6061 is probably best suited to reverse grip bends where the criteria for a legitimate bend is 40° or greater whereby it would be best to stop at around 60° to play it safe. With all these factors in mind it is absolutely in my honest opinion not worth training on this type of stock. The metal itself is reasonably tough but nothing that you couldn't get from drill rod or cold rolled steel with a zero risk factor. All in all I'm happy I conducted this experiment and with the remaining pieces of 6061, I will probably cut down to six or seven inch lengths and use them for reverse grip bends but I don't foresee myself purchasing or training on this type of stock ever again ... Not worth the reward!"

Thanks for sharing your experience with that type of aluminum. Glad you're ok!

Just a piece of information that might be useful for somebody in the future: it is best to avoid precipitation hardened aluminum for bending: it makes the material hard and with it - brittle. 2000, 6000, 7000 series have those alloys (although probably not all subtypes).

I definitely will my brother. Overall it wasn't as bad as it could've been if I didn't research and prepare beforehand, but I won't be purchasing this type of metal anytime soon. I'll cut down the remaining pieces I have left and use them for reverse grip bends but afterwards that's it with 6061!

Your welcome brother and thank you for sharing some technical information. Brittle is a great way to describe 6061 and it snapped in that exact way. It was an interesting learning experience!🤙

Kerckhaert SX7 certification video:

• Kerckhaert SX7
• Single leathers

"I believe I've got it right this time! I'm submitting this video for approval to Anton Siden who runs the Kerckhaert horseshoe bending certification group on the gripboard. I'm quite pleased with today's bend and I'm looking forward to training on heavier shoes!"

"The kink + one"

• Four 5/16 x 8~3/8 12L14 CRS (kinked)
• One FBBC 9/32 x 5 CRS (complete bend)

"For this training session I decided to add something new that I will be experimenting with over the next few months. On the days that I kink bars I will throw in a random sub maximal bend ranging in length from 5 in to 8 and 3/8. These random bends will be to completion and may require single, one and a half or double wraps depending on how I feel. On the days that I finish off the kinked bars I will do the same and I look forward to seeing what this experiment provides in the upcoming months."

Steel snapping:
• 3/8 x 8 307A grade 2 bolt
• Double wraps

"It was nice to be reunited with steel snapping today. In trying to balance my favorite sessions with the steel, my focus will be on Double overhand with reverse and DU thrown in (depending on how I feel), horseshoe bending or some form of braced bending and without question STEEL SNAPPING! Snapping steel is truly in a class by itself in my opinion and is a great way to keep things fresh and strong for other types of activities with the steel. It trains the heart and lungs, obliques, grip (you always have to grip tightly during a snap), and tricep lockout strength which is huge for horseshoe bending. To me it's a win win activity and it felt great to snap the steel again!"

Kerckhaert SX7 #2/ Short steel braced bending:

"Today's session with the steel involved horseshoe bending and short steel braced bending. First up was a solid bend on an SX7 that felt really good. Afterwards I brace bent a 5/16 x 8" Tall Edgin that felt just as great."

"In search of the Tall Duke"
• 3 isometric hits
• fat wraps
• 5/16 x 8 grade 5 Edgin

"It's been a while since I set an unbraced bending goal for myself so I set my sights on the FBBC Tall Duke Of All Bastards. This particular bar's demensions are 11/32 x 8 in 1018 cold rolled steel. I'm going to take my time and map out a solid training routine to get me there. This session was an iso session that was mediocre but it's a start. I'll alternate between isos and a kink, sweep, crush schedule. For this goal I'll be training on 12L14 CRS, drill rod, stainless steel and 1/4 x 8 F-911 grade 9 bolts. I look forward to conquering the Tall Duke in the upcoming future but for now I have my work cut out for me."

"The road continues"
• Four 5/16 x 8 304 stainless steel bars
• Kink only
• Single leathers

"For this week's training I added some 304 SS to the mix and over time I'll include 303 SS & drill rod along with 1018 CRS and 11/32 brass. The first video was muted because I've been getting flagged by IG & FB for music copyrighted material, so I shut the music off and completed a very satisfying session of bending. This Thursday I'll finish off the 12L14 bars I swept last week and the bars I kinked today will be swept next week Thursday. Great day of bending!"
