Recommended Posts

Below are the established ways to qualify.

Qualification Chance 1:

During the current GSI season, athletes who:

•   Finish in the top third of their weight class in a GSI-sanctioned contest (explained directly below).
•   Finish in the top third of overall standings in a GSI-sanctioned contest (explained directly below).

There must be a minimum of three competitors in a weight class in order for someone to qualify.

The number of qualified competitors will be rounded down where required.

Example:

If there is 1 competitor in a class, no one qualifies;

If there are 2 competitors in a class, no one qualifies;

If there are 3 competitors in a class, the winner qualifies;

If there are 4 competitors in a class, the winner qualifies;

If there are 5 competitors in a class, the winner qualifies;

If there are 6 competitors in a class, the top 2 qualify;

If there are 7 competitors in a class, the top 2 qualify;

If there are 8 competitors in a class, the top 2 qualify;

If there are 9 competitors in a class, the top 3 qualify;

If there are 10 competitors in a class, the top 3 qualify;

In the case of multi-venue contests, qualifications are calculated based on the entire field of competitors (not just the competitors at a given venue).

“Season” is defined as the time between United States Championships. For example, the 2015-16 season began on June 7th, 2015 and concludes with the 2016 United States  Championship on June 4th, 2016.

Qualification Chance #5 - Run a GSI Sanctioned Grip Competition

If you run a GSI-sanctioned competition during the contest season, you will get an automatic invite to that year's US Grip Championship / North American Championship.

As the NAGS Committee will not necessarily be actively tracking this list, it is the competitor’s responsibility to alert member of the Committee when elite status is achieved.

Notes:

Once you have qualified for and competed in the NAGS Championship you will automatically be qualified for the following year.

Female competitors do not need to qualify for the NAGS Championship. Qualification criteria may eventually be established if the pool of female competitors significantly increases.

I added 3 new listings for Nationals qualifying: Little Big Horn, Adjustable Thick Bar, and 2.25" Crusher.

Curious whether you have considered adding silver bullet.

Just saw this now.  I'm interested in hearing what you would suggest for this.  Thanks.

I haven't done any analysis of what people at each weight can do, but just from what I think I have seen done, you could make one of the three feats be that a person does 5 seconds SB hold (or whatever time seems right) on a gripper for their weight class:  66kg and 74kg COC 3, 83kg and 93kg COC 3.5, 100kg and up COC 4?

It doesn't really matter to me, I am in for a different reason, just wondering since a lot of other feats are on there and that isn't.  You could also do it by RGC rating.

Clearly this is not super important though, just thought of it and posted and forgot about it lol.

It's not a bad idea at all.  Commonly available equipment, and the event is run quite frequently.  Thanks.

The season starts the day after the US Grip Championship for the USA and the day after the North American Grip Championship for all of North America.  The specific Championship event is the last day.

I saw for the sledge the handle must be at least 31". Most sledges sold are 36", do some people trim them to 31" and If so does this help?

31" is the handle only NOT including the hammer head.

@Jedd Johnson can I submit my video for qualification here? If so

My weight is 255 so these should be good. I submitted 3 gripper closes because they're sometimes hard to capture on film, especially by yourself.

I would like to thank Josh Culpepper and Eric Roussin for their research and insights this morning.

Josh went through and isolated the results of the top 20 most commonly contested Grip Sport events.

12 lifts were then identified to be either added to the qualifications standards for National Competition or the standards were updated considering the better pool of results that have been produced.

The following lifts per weight class will be used going forward (posted below).

You will see the lift bolded, followed by the mend's weight classes, and the weight that must be lifted, in order to be considered a qualified lift.

I am currently working on the list of Lifters Qualified for US Nationals.  These lifters will participate in the poll coming soon to decide where Nationals will take place this year.  Stay tuned for that in the 2024 US Nationals Qualified Lifters Thread.

In the meantime, if you feel you are qualified based on lifts from either the previous lifts, or the updated lifts, please contact me VIA EMAIL - please do not Direct Message me here or send me a message through Facebook or Instagram.  EMAIL ME PLEASE: jedd.diesel@gmail.com

Thanks again to Josh and Eric for all the help with this.

Is there a reason why some of the lifts were lowered, just to try to get more entrants? Nice for me since I can do several of these pretty easily now

Josh researched the data and Eric refined it. In some cases, some of the lifts were lowered.  But it was all based on the available data which we have.  In no way was it  anything like, "we want more people, so we're going to lower the numbers." Everything was based around the analysis of the data at hand.

Nice that makes a lot of sense. I always thought some of the lower weight class nunebrs were a bit high but this makes sense. Probably tough too since there's fewer light lifters in general so you don't get a huge sample size for the data.

Precisely.  A lot of it has been guesswork.  These days we have more hard data to go by.

It seems to me that grip is growing a little.  Seems like there are more frequent comp opportunities at least.  Good!

Yep, no doubt. Always looking to add more sanctioned meets to the calendar, as well, which I include in a weekly GSI Newsletter. I encourage any interested Gripboard members to email me in order to get added to the list so they know when there is a sanctioned meet taking place somewhere nearby.

That makes a lot of sense. I used to think that some of the numbers for the lower weight classes were a bit high, but now I understand that it could be challenging. There are fewer light lifters in general, so the data sample size is probably not as large, making it tougher to establish accurate benchmarks.

Honestly, I didn't even know Luke made vertical bars, and I'm not aware of it ever having been in a GSI contest.
