How many people have lifted the Inch DB?

Sorry if this has been answered before but I searched around and didn’t see anyone asking this question.

Obviously an exact number is impossible but I,m curious if people know a ballpark number. Inch replicas count obviously.

Based on zero research and a tiny bit of knowledge I'm gonna say about 200

How did you come up with that number, Mike? I actually suggested  in a thread the other day that it would be cool to see how many people could come forward with proper video evidence that has done it. I would be the first to submit my video if others actually would as well . 200 seems like an arbitrary number, how did you come up with that estimate? Not saying it’s right or wrong, just curious as to the methodology you chose to come up with it.

Honestly I just guessed, it felt plausible and I went with it. Video footage would be a much smaller list.

Would love to see that thread started.... shall I?

I would say it's probably more than 200. There's plenty of armwrestlers and strongmen who can lift the Inch without any problems. Then we have all the grip specialists, which is a quite large group by itself.

People who can and people who has are two completely different things. There are probably tens of thousands of people who can lift an inch, but most of them will never get to try to lift an inch. Most of them will have no clue of what an inch is.

Yes I know but I think more than 200 have done it.

That’s the difference, and Dave hit it right on the head... many “can” but may never know... but who “has” and has the documentation to verify is what is the interest here.

Comon guys we are smart and matured here. There is no I think when we are talking statistics and facts. Who did and who did not. What is "I think that many people can so I will count them as did"??!!. I think I can snatch the Inch with training so count me as one. What the hell is that?

Statistically speaking, there isnt enough access to inches to truly expolate a number these days. Not to mention the history of the DB itself. Not like theres a list like on the dinnie stones.

Some lists I've found from David Horne's forum and gripboard. Please note, some people appear on several lists. I have edited the lists so that each name only appear once (hopefully without any errors). That makes it easier to count.

Some people I have seen videos of and heard about. Or it's reasonable to assume that they have lifted an Inch DB.

Alexey Tyukalov
Mike Burke
Rich Williams
Odd Haugen
Mark Henry
Eddie Hall
Mark Felix
Paul Savage
Sl-Ghi Choi
Håkan Carlsson
Oscar Bertrandsson (was only 15 years old when he did it and is to my knowledge the youngest person to acomplish this feat)
Martin Arildsson
Kalle Lane
Cim Johansson
Yves Gravelle
Luke Raymond
Jon Call
Carl Myerscaugh
Carl-August Mertz

That is 76 names. I can easly count to 100 if I wanted to search the web a bit more and there's at least twice that amount who has done it. I remember seeing many videos of people I don't know the name of. And that's only by people who post videos. I would say that 200 people would be the absolute minimum.

Ok, I can see a lot of people who have never lifted the inch or don’t have video verification are going to get silly in true grip board fashion as to why one can or can’t lift it or ones lift was better than another’s. . Please let’s not turn another thread into a circus. Thanks.

It was written jokingly. But I respect every single grip type more than thick bar. The only way of making thick bar lifts fair is the events being actually thick bar for everyone, a fixed space between fingers, so it's actually an open hand lift. Despite all that, I train thick bar a lot, since I want to prevail at something that I'm weakest at.

This is ft a full inch lift and  Video is the proof for this thread, not speculation, not talk of hand size or why one can and can’t lift the inch... just a record of video of those that can. Please let’s not turn another thread into a circus. Thanks.

Sorry wrong thread. Doesn't say anything about video proof in this one.

I'd love to see a vid thread, and I won't have an entry because my hands are too small and I don't weigh enough and I'm too old, so it's not fair and they should add weights to the Inch with magnets for big guys so they can have a harder time with it and I can use two hands, and lots of big guys in remote places or with no interest in lifting could lift it if only they wanted to so we should all chip in and send them Inches.  And of course, I am saying all this in fun.

But the original question, by bear hugger, was "How many people HAVE lifted the Inch dumbbell?"  I think it would be very hard to answer the original question without speculating, because I think the Inch has been around for something in the nature of 100 years, and people did not catalog let alone video the canon of successful lifters (unless, of course, they did; but I doubt it).

Who would be able to lift the Inch today is a smaller subset of who in history could have lifted it, and is also speculative; Joe's idea of a thread would be more along the lines of, "Who, among those active enthusiasts who are aware of the Inch, could lift it today?  Let's see, submit vid here: __."  The result would be a fair sample (since not everyone who could do it would bother) of athletes and enthusiasts who can do it right now -- still wouldn't tell you who ever did, or who could, but it would give you an idea by looking across the board at the submissions what kind of athlete/enthusiast is succeeding at it.

All for the exercise, but as I said, I can't, so I'll just watch.  I do enjoy trying my hand at baby inches and have pulled a couple of those, so I respect the difficulty of the deed.  Go play fellas.

Let' add some more fuel to a flame. Lifters with big hands who didn't succed in olympic and powerlifting shifted to grip to dominate! 😈

Athlethes with big hands would probably do better in sports like basketball and handball and they could still win the olympics in those sports ;)

Thickbar is still more fair than Blobs :)

Interestingly, one person who probably never lifted the Thomas Inch Dumbbell without cheating is Thomas Inch himself.  Many don't know that the original bell has a hole in it.  Mr. Inch (I hear he was a good 2 1/2" when angry) had a pin that came down from a wrist strap he wore.  That pin would be inserted in the hole and stop the rotation of the dumbbell, making it way easier to lift.  Whether he ever successfully lifted it without using this old time strongman trick has been debated, but probably not.
