Anyone else rooting for "The Average Joe" Cameraman Ian to make a strong comeback?

The past events haven't been in his favor but I have a feeling he can close the gap a little bit in episodes 4 and 5.

I thought he did great with the hammer toss. He got my respect there.

Last night, I binged. Saw all three episodes to date. It was nice to hear so much mention of Thomas Topham, 18th Century English strongman. Not much on this forum about him. A dozen years ago, I purchased David Horne’s last copy of his (and Elizabeth’s) book on Topham. Maybe I will actually get around to reading it now!

But the Brian versus Nick one upping each other on the Topham stunt was as good as anything you could watch. Best, at his age, showed grit that was over the top.

Definitely worth watching, four stars.👍👍👍👍

Yea, that was an amazing battle.  You could see the relief in Brian's face when he knew it was over.

You could also see real disappointment in his face when Eddie awarded Nick the Honorary Hall trophy.

Watching this, I have a newfound respect for Nick.  The second episode where he came back and got the silver dollar squat after getting stapled was impressive as hell.  He's doing us 50 somethings proud!

This is an outtake from episode 3 that wasn't included.  Very cool scene.  Eddie Hall can freakin swim.

He's a whale :D

He seems to be good at both endurance and explosive strength. Very good combo, he could probably have won WSM in any era, even when the weights were lighter.

Saw a movie the other day, he was the star, MEGALADON! 🦈

Just watched all 3 episodes and I really like the show. The guys are super funny competing and picking on each other. They always start the show by saying they are the 4 strongest men in the world and i want to correct it every time. Brian and Eddie can make that claim at their peak (Brian seems to be declining and Eddie is retired and 100 lbs lighter than at his peak) while nick and Robert have never been close to that claim.

Depends what you mean with that. Eddie still has the deadlift WR in strongman, until someone breaks that I think he has the right to say he's the strongest. Brian has the strongest grip in the world in my opinion.

There's a lot of different ways of measuring strength. No man is the best at everything.

By the way Nick did beat the record in the carousel lift. So he is in fact the strongest in the world at that and that is a fact until someone beats it.

Nick is arguably the strongest masters strong man.  Obie has the American log press record.

Whether they're the 4 strongest in the world, they are 4 strong dudes.

Definitely 4 strong guys just saying they aren’t prime and being the best at one obscure lift doesn’t qualify for me. Robert and nick are further than Brian and Eddie and those 2 aren’t prime right now

I also believe Robert has one of the strongest overhead presses in the world. Top 5 atleast. Strength is subjective. Even a superheavyweight world champion armwrestler has grounds for saying he has the strongest arm in the world. A SHW Olympic gold medalist weightlifter with world records has grounds for a piece of that title as well. Back in the late 70's and early 80's the Worlds Strongest man comp was just an event to get together the strongest men from different diciplines of strength such as weightlifting, field throwing (shot put hammer disc etc.) Powerlifters, even pro wrestlers and bodybuilders. Guys who they thought can put on a show and perform crazy feats of strength to prove who was really the worlds strongest man. It wasnt until a few years into the comp that in my opinion they were crowning the true worlds strongest man and even then, subjective. Geoff Capes was a multiple worlds strongest man winner, spectacular athete, he was originally a shot putter. World class level throwing around 70ft. At his first comp he was just an elite shot putter who had a weightlifting backround entering the comp weighing around 250lbs. He actually faired way better than he imagined from the carryover of his athletic backround and decided to train full time from there on out. He gained over 100 lbs throught the years and won i believe 3 titles. He was the best at winning worlds strongest man events and had amazing technique in a lot of the events where most of his competition was relying on brute strength. Capes was strong, but didnt hold a single record in any static pl or weightlifting movement. He was great at the events. Nowadays you can be pretty sure your wsm winner will be the strongest man partly due to the demand of such elite deadlift and overhead performances.

All in all im really enjoying the show too, its an awesome look into the "strength" world on nat tv and we might get a couple more cool grip feats to go with it too. They can all hold their own as the worlds best in atleast one aspect of strength. Really they got these 4 guys together because they are real life friends and have what appears to be great chemistry.

Even Chez at a point would be among a small group with one of the worlds strongest crushing strength. (A great achievment)Just one of the many aspects of strength.

Best post I have read in a while, and what I think as well. No man can ever be truly strongest or the best at everything... but these guys are some of the strongest at most.

I really don't see any problem that they say that they are the strongest in the world. Beacuse they are among the strongest in the world and at some lifts they are the strongest right now, obscure lift or not doesn't really change that fact.

And if you have a WR (especially in something that isn't obscure like the deadlift) I think you have the right to say that you are the strongest, even if you're in a wheel chair, as long as nobody has beaten that record. I really don't see any problem with that. After all it's the history channel :)

By the way Eddie never deadlifted more than 460 or so in training and he said just recently in one of his youtube videos that he could be back at the same level again within a year if he wanted to. Now he has a bicep injury so I don't know but otherwise I would not doubt for a second that he could do that.

@Chez, for me this is the same as saying that you are among the strongest in the world at grippers. Just because you have some injury in your right hand doesn't change that fact for me.

Yeah, we just have to bite out tongues and appreciate it for what it is. It’s as good as we are going to get for television. Although you would expect a little less Networky hype from the respectable History Channel. It’s a good series any way you slice it.

i liked seeing that near-Stonehenge-sized monolith in front of the Anderson Family Home in Georgia, mentioned, among other things, Paul’s 6000 plus lbs. back lift. I imagine on some forum someone is complaining about that.

To everyone’s credit, they were making adjustments downward on the Silver Dollar Squat, not acting like the Ed Sullivan-Show-Number was the correct one to be shooting for. Even with a much lower weight, they all appreciated the challenges that apparatus was causing.

in order to make this series appeal to Mainsteam Audiences, they did what they needed to do, and it still worked.

I thought they handled the fact that Paul probably wasn't actually squatting 1100 pounds every night for a month at the casino very tactfully.  Even the 750 or so they calculated it to be on that wobbly setup was crazy.  Blamed it on the Vegas promoters, which is probably what happened.

As for Paul's backlift, I think the 6000 lbs was probably a best guess eyeball estimate.  They had no way to weigh all that stuff he lifted.  @Roark has done a lot of research on what the actual weight probably was (a lot less than 6k).  Either way, it was a heavy azz lift by a super strong guy, taking a lot fewer "supplements" than today's strongmen.

Yeah, they handled it very respectfully.

No way to measure it, but I think Paul Anderson, by far, had the strongest “buttocks” known to Mankind. Really something else.

It was very cool to see his whole family on the show, even his widow!

i am looking forward to what they do in episodes 3 & 4. It’s going to be tough to top.

Was very cool they got them so involved.

Here's the article by Joe Roark on Paul's backlift.  Pretty good stuff.  I like the following quote at the end.  Applies to the Kinney stuff we discuss around here.

"Someone actually said to me, well, you cannot prove it did not happen.  This article is written for those who understand that the person claiming to have lifted something (the affirmative) has the burden of proof. If you, dear reader, believe that something happened because someone cannot disprove it, then may I please claim to bench press 700 lbs?"

I don’t retreat from my statement. Just cause you hold a world record at one point doesn’t mean you are one of the “4 strongest in the world currently”. And yes I am injured currently so I am not one of the best crushes currently but I’m rehabbing to get that back (I wouldn’t bet against me to get it back). It’s not a given I will though. Saying nick and Robert are one of the 4 strongest in the world is complete BS and exaggerated for the show. Eddie and big z would destroy Robert over head press. They said strongest in the world not america. Eddie and Brian can claim that in peak form but both aren’t there right now. Brian has a chance of getting there again but Eddie is retired and won’t approach peak form again. Eddie will still be dam strong though but he’s happy hocking products and maintaining a lower level of strength and body weight in retirement

Listen to the words of the intro. They said 4 strongest men in the world. Not some of the strongest in word or amongst the strongest in the World. That means 4 current strongest

I still really enjoy the show though, just saying that intro statement was a little over the top

Definetly agree. There are going to be a lot of regulars tuning in thinking Nick Best is still making a run at winning the WSM next year. It is kind of interesting to see how the History channel which has a reputation more to do with facts, will kind of warp a title to meet their ideal mold of marketability. I guess close enough. The cool thing about it though is that some of these guys are possibly the strongest men in actual human History. We all know Eddie Halls pedigree, Shaw arguably the most physically imposing with multiple WSM titles a 1000+ dead along with record breaking grip strength etc, the other two guys have the benchmark strength to test out these challenges of human historys toughest feats of strength, and have elite strength. They arent number 3 and 4 but they are hanging with Hall and Shaw which aint easy and i guess thats close enough.

A little over top? Absolutely. The Masses don’t know that, but strength fans do. So, as Viceversus said, close enough.

And if Nick picks up an unexpected Sponsor as a result of the attention, I say Good for him!

History channel stopped dealing with facts a long time ago. Its just like every other channel on cable. Im waiting for a real housewives of museum curators show, with special guest:
