You can go to your local hardware store and most of them have a steel section. Buy some of the 4 foot pieces of thinner stock, like 1/4 or 3/8 round or 1/8 or 1/4 flat bars and start bending and shaping the steel. Will be fun and good practice. Later, you can start getting bigger dimensions and longer bars from the steel yard. Stick to hot rolled steel. I must be the only blacksmith that doesn't know where to get steel. My welder friend retired and i've been working off his stock... But its outside and has surface rust. I'd rather buy new stuff and not have to sand the rust off. My uncle knows a blacksmith who's shop is 5 minutes from mine. I'm going to see if I can buy steel from him.
