Hi Everyone,

It seems about time that I started thinking about building or acquiring a crossbar for judgment of height for lifts. If anyone has any suggestions for good designs or if there are good resources available out there already please let me know.

I am not very good with making things so simple would be good.

Thanks.

Al

I haven't done it, but a quick and easy way would be to hang a flexible measuring tape to where it comes off the ground at the required height. So for a 10" lift, tape or magnet it on so 10" mark is at the bottom of the weights.

@wobbler Thanks I will consider that, at least for the short term.

BSS makes one that looks slick. I've bought too much stuff from Gil already or I'd own one.

Here is the comp platform and crossbar setup I just made for us to use for the cross Canada grip contest.

I had a nice talk with @Andrew P about the history of the crossbar. He joked that he should write an article about it. I would be interested in reading it as I'm sure others here would.

For practice lifts I stretch a band between the uprights of my squat rack.

A couple banana boxes and a length of 1/4" cold roll seem to help a guy into world record territory a la Dan Fleming.

For a simple and more "permanent" cross bar you can easily build one with the following equipment.

2 ea. metal flange 1/2"

2 ea. 1/2" x 2' metal pipe

2 ea. u-bolts

1 ea. metal cross bar

Screw the pipes into the flanges. Screw a u-bolt onto each pipe at the appropriate height. Standard weight plates are used to stabilize it.  Or you could screw the flanges onto a piece, or pieces, of wood.
