Roark
Charles Jefferson on Dec 11, 1890, at 5'9" in height and weighing 170 pounds, used his large and long hands to accomplish a lift shown in Ironman Jan 1957 p 31. It is a very short range 'deadlift' using long handles attached to a a weight below a platform on which he is standing. Probably the weight moved only an inch or so- it is difficult to tell, but given the amount of weight, and his very slender build, and the complacent look on his face, something has always seemed amiss about this. The weight is 1,571.25 lbs- over NINE times his bodywt! The handles, Willoughby says, were designed to 'aid' his grip. Jefferson was partial to thick handled bells because of his long fingers and could: 1. lift a 208 lb anvil by its 4.5" wide base using two hands 2. lift a 176 lb anvil by the horn and twist it side to side (no mention of cleaning; and this would have been 8 lbs more than Jowett is credited with cleaning in this manner) 3. lift a square block of iron measuring 4.75" and weighing 62.25 lbs, and excluding his little finger and the finger next to it, he would pinch this weight and pass it between his legs from hand to hand. On a non-related topic, in Pumping Iron, the movie, Arnold mentioned that he could not attend his father's funeral because he was heavy into preparation for the 1972 Mr. Olympia. The O was Sep 24, 1972 in Essen. So when did Arnold's father pass? Dec 11, 1972...
RiotGrip
Roark, is 1571 lbs the record for this lift? and are these other lifts records too?
Roark
RiotGrip, According to Willoughby, only G.W. Rolandow surpassed Jefferson in this 'hand lift' with hands clear of the body's sides. Rolandow managed 1,650 lbs. Regarding the other lifts, in the order presented: 1. The text does not say that this was a pinch lift, but it surely must have been; otherwise the lift would not be outstanding. But my data are not organized in a way where I can quickly answer if this was a record. 2. I think Sorin has lifted more than this. 3. Don't think this is a record either, but the width etc makes it difficult (for me quickly) to answer that.
Guest tomykelly
As far as Arnold I read it wasn;t true just put in the film to so how much he wanted the Mr.O.Then I read it was .Also they showed him smoking pot in the film later they said he didn't smoke pot either .So how knows .In the world of pro bodybuilding nothing surprises me anymore .... Roark
The chronology of events is certain; the motive is not, but it is nonetheless forever on film.
