Hi guys after many years i'm here to ask for some help.

Two weeks ago i've cutted my index finger , thanks god the cut is on the upper part of the finger with 5 stitches and (maybe) no tendons involved. but i've been with a "tutor" to keep it straight for about 12 days.

Now... the stitches are gone and the tutor too.... but is pretty swollen and i can no bend it more than 20° ... still no strength at all... such weird feeling. :unsure

Do you have some advice to recover as fast as possible??
The image allowed is just to understand where the problem is.

Thanks a lot, is nice to be back on the GB even if in this way. :D

Bye

I'm not a doctor, but my related experiences may help,

As important as it is to focus on the positives in all of what transpires in our lifetimes, count the blessing that you didn't sever any of your tendons. Once your swelling goes away and the laceration gets a chance to heal to the extent of when your scab will begin to fall off, then you'll be able to see where you are at in terms of recovery.

Were you suggested physio for this? And have you been able to move your finger at all yet? In the case of passive motion (forcing it to bend with your other hand) it is something often encouraged to begin doing, even just days after surgery to keep the finger moving so that no ROM is lost. Active motion is the sent signal from your brain to your index finger - telling it to bend, a signal that takes just a fraction of second for it to be sent and followed through...as both are completely different, passive comes quick as most of it comes with stretching, the active motion is harder to come by once lost. Nothing meant to come across as discouraging, but really do keep on top of this injury, and ask your doctor what they want you doing everyday for this finger.

I severed my left index finger as well - palm side however. Except I hit a home run on this particular injury and completely severed my flexor tendon of that finger as well as it's supporting artery and nerve.

Here's a picture, a zig/zag "Brunner" incision was used to retract my tendon, exactly what happens when an elastic band is cut under tension and is cut.

The following therapy after the 2 surgeries is what got me into Grip-Sport. I've found a past-time that is fun and complements my active-lifestyle. That same hand can close the #2 on good days, but every day is another opportunity to train! Unfortunately from the nature of my specific mishap, the finger has not returned and become more of a claw. The middle finger of that hand has more than compensated for the loss of function in the index finger.

I hope this can serve as motivation to you, or in the very least - show you that you're not alone. Ask your doctor/physio whether or not you can begin passive motion of the finger, you can bend your finger while in stitches, it will bleed, it will hurt, but you truly do not want to lose that range of motion you had before.

as i wrote unfortunately i can bend it just about 20° when i force with other hand is not the scar the problem but a pain INSIDE the capsule.... they not even done an xray to check if the bones are ok or a MR to check the ligaments and tendons... the cause of the cut is a fall while i was running and the damages could be various... i can move it and i've the strength to lift a glass of water.. but if i push laterally or force to close over that angle... uh.. pain.

Thanks a lot for the help... i'll follow doc and physio advices... and naturally come back to some grip trainig as soon as possible.

Hi Bicio

How is the recovery coming? Have you seen your specialist yet?

How exactly did you cut the finger while falling?
