Sledgehammer DL

Hello, it is 6:30A.M. New Year's Eve and Iam wondering about how to total the lbs of torque on the DL - yikes. Anyhow, does an individual weigh the entire sledgehammer x inches or do you just total the engraved weight of said sledgehammer x inches to get lbs of torque? Thanks and Happy New Year to you and yours

It's really difficult to get super accurate if you can't separate the head and the handle, but this can get you pretty close:

  1. Find the point on the handle where the hammer is perfectly balanced. it should be pretty close to the head. This is your center of mass.
  2. Weigh the entire hammer.
  3. Measure the distance from the center of mass to the center of where your hand will be placed on the hammer when you are holding it. This is your lever arm length.
  4. Multiply the lever arm length by the weight of the entire hammer and you will get a torque value.

There are a few variables that this doesn't account for, but it will get you pretty close.
