I am hitting a snag finding the position for the crush though - need more practice.

Do you mean the leg crush, from ~120* to 180*?

Yes. My arms and legs were really sweating and I was slipping. Still didn't feel like the right spot even though I finished both bars off.

Good progress with the bending! Your crush will get stronger with practice for sure.

Chalk on the inside of your pants legs can help.

Saturday 6/2

Pinch W11D2

APA: 145.5 - 4 X 2 (4, 5, 6, 10 seconds)  Weight was moving easily

Gold Bar: 55.5 (2 X 5 secs), 58.3 (2 X 5 secs), 60.6 (2 X 5 secs), 63.3 (2 X 1)

Coin DL: 8#

Right - worked up to 20" X 2

Left - Worked up to 20.5" and 21"

PR's for both hands, feels good man. Also, I did several holds at 17" while making dinner after workout.

As I slowly segue into more PL (Squat Rack is not even started yet), I did some light Clean and Press, followed directly by Front Squats.  This really got my CNS going and I believe is what helped my Pinch and Coin DL.  It's amazing how that stuff works.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ()()()()() ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday 6/4

Thick Bar W11D2

2.5 Crusher: 105 - 4 X 2 (5, 5, 5, R - 7, L - 8 seconds)

Wrist Wrench: 68.2 - 4 X 2 (5, 5, 5, 7 seconds)

Wrist Roller: Reverse X 5

Axle: 200 X 3, 247 X 3, 287 X 1, 267 X 2, 200 X 5

I love the axle.  I take back all the mean things I said about it.

I have an idea for braced bending that may change the world forever.  As always, I promise to overthink it get a little nerdy and make a video too.  Unfortunately, a close relative is in the hospital and is in a very bad way - I haven't made it out to the shop all week and don't know when I will be able to.

 Wednesday 6/6

Pinch W12D1

APA: 154.1 - 4 X 2 (5, 5, 5, 14 seconds)  Weight was moving quickly and the hold felt very strong - Excited to see how I test next week.

Gold Bar: 57.8 - (2 X 5 seconds) X 4

2" Climbers Pinch: 70 + sup. band (4 X 2)

More Clean and Press followed by Front Squat.  Legs were still sore from Saturday, probably too many BW squats throughout the week.

Last 2-hand Pinch PR was set after SJ's 4-for-Feb at 176.5.  Weeks 5-8 of the program were unsuccessful as I was supposed to hit 105% of the max.  Couldn't even get 100% again.  Looking back, I have made a few technical changes to my setup, as well as, taking better care of my skin to make me more consistent week-to-week - all done since I was missing 100-105%.  So I'm very optimistic.

Also, very tentatively planning on the Waterloo location for the Cross-Canada Grip Competition.  I like the events and I think the 2" crusher will be plenty of enough reason to start programming axle as a supplement to the 2" crusher.  I've never even tried a silver bullet.  I've been wanting to get back into grippers but am making progress on thick bar so I don't do grippers.  SB may be just what I need.  There are some serious logistic issues for the trip to Canada right now, but they can be resolved.

Friday 6/8
Thick Bar W12D1
2.5 crusher:  112.1 - 4 X 2 (5, 5, 5, R - 3, L - 5)

Right wrist was not feeling very good tonight. The last rep of the last set I only got 3 seconds so I did 2 singles after that.

2.5 crusher: 97.2 - 2 X 5

Wrist wrench: 73 - 4 X 2 (5, 5, 5, 5 seconds)

Same as 2.5 crusher, right wrist didn't feel right.

Gresham Gripper Axle Rows: 100 - 4 X 5

I tore my hands up wrist rolling my kids and the Power Wheel. It was fun, but it made training pretty rough tonight. Blisters on both hands. Normally I wear gloves for wrist roller but for some reason I didn't today. SAD.

Finished the squat rack a few days ago.  It also works well for bench press.  I was pretty happy that I am able to still bench and squat my body weight (205) after many years of no training on these.  Although this isn't very impressive, It's encouraging that I can still do this.

I hit some APA at 140 x 5 singles tonight, but otherwise I'm going to let my skin rest until at least Friday.  I'm going to experiment with the width a little, but definitely want to hit a PR for pinch and thick bar by the end of the weekend.

A few pics of the squat rack:

The bench area is on the side facing the camera while then squat area is inside

The safeties are 1" solid round, with 3 possible positions.

The bottom and top supports are 1" pipe

The hooks are quick release and I gave myself 5 different height options. I would have done more, but I really hate drilling holes.

20180612_192544.thumb.jpg.eddc2252802f65968ca3fbf2df494f9b.jpg

This support was an afterthought, but my wife insisted that we have it.

I cut up my old gripper rating rig, and now it attaches to my squat rack.

I used the legs to make these supports for overhead pin press

20180614_203850.thumb.jpg.1b24983d9db4f3ad668895319d54610d.jpg

Also with 5 positions for height.

I welded it all with 6010/6011 because I have a ton of rods that needed to be burned up, and I thought it would be a good idea to get my whippin' hand back in shape.

Thursday 6/14

Overhead press: a bit of volume tonight but I did work up to a single of a strict 155. Not as much as I thought I would be able to do but I will take it. My upper back is still a little bit sore from some dumbell rows on Monday.

95 - 2 X 10
135 - 3 X 3
115 - 3 X 5
155 - X 1

I also worked on the moontop:
26.7 - 3 sets of doubles
31.6 - 3 sets of doubles.

Aaaaand some braced bending.
Finished off a 5/8" X 31 that has been stuck at 90 degrees for quite a while. I started off just seeing what I could do with it, but I was having a real hard time finding a good position for the sweep.
So I picked up a piece of 1/2" square X 23 and worked on it for a while.  After working with it for a while I did find a really good way to transition from the Kink to the sweep. I have had great difficulty on the shorter bars transitioning between stages of the bend, but I did much better tonight.  So after finishing off that piece of square, I was able to apply that to the 5/8" and it finish it off finally.

Very cool, as is everything you make it seems. Nice job on the bends too!

Friday 6/15

Conventional DL:

Started with some Romanian DL:

135 X 2 X 10

225 X 2 X 5

275 X 3

325 X 3 Singles

365 X 1

Pretty happy I got the 365, but after reviewing the footage my form was really breaking down.  I would say that 350 would be a RPE 10 (with good form).

I hit a 2-hand pinch PR too, 187.3....  Very happy with this and is an 11 pound increase since returning from the SJ4's-4-for-Feb Comp.  I intentionally did not weigh anything as I was adding plates and lifting.  I did not want the weight to get in my head.  I think that a 200 lb pinch is possible this year and it is one of my goals.

I also did some braced bending for a little project/video I put together.

update to the log coming soon.  has been a very busy week.

I did recheck grippers in prep for the Cross-Canada comp and grippers are a little rusty....

Based on this close, I think I should start doing negatives with a CoC 4

Ok. Last weekend I also tested thick bar... bad idea.  Didn't really pull what I wanted.  2.5" crusher ended up at 136.5, which is a PR.  I also managed 87.8 on Wrist Wrench... was hoping for 90+.

Moving on...

Monday 6/18

Bench: 185 - 5 X 5

DB Rows: 100 - 5 X 8

APA @ 2.125": 145.3 X 3, 5, 7, 5, 5  then 155.4 X 5

Lots of volume, feeling out a new width.  I think I like it.  I spent a lot of time using the band and the 2" climbers pinch to try to supinate my hand during the last block.  With 2-Hand, I try to supinate both hands like I'm trying the bend the APA in my hands.  This really seems to help drive the thumbs into the surface.

Gold Bar: 55.7 - 4 X 5, X 3

CP: 15 - 4 X 20

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 6/20

Squat: 135 X 5, 155 X 5, 165 X 2 X 5

Mobility is not great so I'm giving low bar a chance.  I can get good depth but ATG is not going to be possible for a while, not sure if my knees will handle it either.

2.5 Crusher: 75 X 2 X 5, 112 X 2 X 5

OHP: 95 X 10, 135 X 5, 145 X 3

135 felt easy, 145 pretty much stopped me.  I tried to make sure to leave at least 2 reps in the tank, so I had to stop at 3 reps.

Wrist Roller: Revers X 6

2" Crusher: 112 X 5, 135.3 X 2 X 5

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 6/23

Conventional DL: 225 X 2 X 5, 315 X 5 singles, 295 X 3 singles

Pulling DO, grip is not causing any issues. My upper back on the other hand.... wants to round over ever so slightly.  Something is missing... need more upper back work.

Grippers: Right MMS: 118 X5, 128 X 5,  148 X 3 singles

Grippers: Left MMS:  118 X 5, 122 X 5, 128 X 1

Silver Bullet Right: - 10lbs + 148 CoC3 X 2 second, X 7 seconds

Silver Bullet: Left: - 10 lbs + 131 CoC2.5 X 1 second, X 7 seconds

Not an actual Silver Bullet, its one I fashioned out of the handle from a Heavy Grip brand Gripper.  I think it will work fine for now.  I also managed to close a 148 GHP 7 for 3 single MMS closes. These are some very exciting times.

Also made this neat device:

Monday 6/25

Bench: 135 - 2 X 10, 185 - 5 X 5

APA @2.125: 150.3 - 5 X 5

Gold Bar: 57.5 X 5, 55.4 - 3 X 5

CP: 15 - 5 X 20

DB Rows: 65 - 2 X 10, 100 - 3 X 8

Braced Bending:

5/8" X 34" - finished off a bar that was bent to ~ 30 degrees

1/2"  Square X 24" - about 15 seconds.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 6/27

Squat: 135 - 5 X 5

It took about 20 minutes of shoulder dislocates and stretching to get under the bar properly.  I stuck with this weight because of pain in my shoulder and I'm really wanting to be ATG since I'm going to do low-bar for a while. My hamstrings and back muscles are fighting for control of my pelvis at the bottom, and I need my back needs to win.

2" Crusher: 135 X 5, 120.7 - 5 X 5

Should have done more here.  135 felt like RPE 10.  120.7 was like RPE 5 though.  CNS came in to play here for sure.

OHP: 135 - 4 X 5

Wrist Roller: Reverse 75 X 2, 75 + Daryl-ette X 1, 75 X 3

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday 6/28

Close Grip Bench: 135 - 2 X 10, 185 X 5, 205 X 2, 225 X 0, 165 - 2 X 5

Coin DL: 8#

Right: WU 17", WU 19", 16" - 2 X 5

Left: WU 18", WU 20", 17" - 2 X 5

Banded Pro/Sup/Deviation: 4 X 20

Blobs: 32.3 X 3, 37.7 X 4, 37.7 + Chain X 3, 41.1 X 3

Blob Trainer: 30.6 - 2 X 5

Triceps Extension & EZ Bar Bicep Curl (not at the same time): 100 - 4 X 10

-----------------------------------------

I still do not have any solid programming yet.  Hopefully another week of training the lifts I want to do and I will have a good handle on how to put it all together.  I think that what I am doing now constitutes preparing for any random task, and not randomly preparing for a task.

Friday 6/29

DL: 165 X 2 X 10, 225 X 2 X 5, 300 X 5 X 5

Grippers: MMS

Right: 122 X 5, 131 X 5, 136 X 5, 140 X 1, 152 X 0, 141(Filed) X 1, 145 X 1

Left: 118 X 2 X 5, 124 X 5, 140 X 1 braced rep, 117 (filed) X 5

I need to work on my set, i really suck at setting again.

Front Squat to box: 155 X 5 (17" box), 155 X 5 (15" Box), 155 X 3 (14" Box), 135 X 5 (14" box)

Silver Bullet - 10 lbs:

Right: 148 X 12 seconds, Left Turn #3 (unrated) X 8 seconds, 152 X 7 seconds

Left: 131 X 6 seconds, 131 X 10 seconds, 134 X 6 seconds.

All grippers used are Iron Mind, I figure I need to get used to the mediocre knurling.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday 7/2

Bench: 135 X 2 X 10, 195 X 5 X 5

Last 2 reps of the last set almost didn't make it.  I'm going to call that RPE 10.

DB Rows: 110 - 5 X 8

I made a really killer loadable dumbell handle, need to put a picture up.  I like it.

CP: 15 - 5 X 20

This thing is getting easier, I'll keep adding weight.

APA 2.125": 155.1 - 5 X 5

This was about RPE 6-7 for each set.  I'm liking the narrower width. I think the supination work combined with some other cues during set-up have really helped lately.

EZ bar Curls: 100 X 5 X 10

Gold Bar: 57.9 - 5 X 5

Kinked a 1/2" square X 23".  Ill save it for later.

I have not been very active on the board but I am still actively training for King Kong and look forward to the Nashvegas, TN venue.

I have shared with a few people, but I figure I will share with all because I have made some very positive changes to my life over the past 3 months:

I'm back in business for myself again, and business is really good.  The economy is growing and it is truly an exciting time to be alive.  The biggest challenge I have right now, for my business anyway, is that my employees are aging and there is a major void of young people interested in the trades.  Seems that most young people have fallen prey to the same scam that I did: The College Scam - The one that says "If you don't go to college, you can't get a good job/ you'll live in poverty all your life / you won't be a dignified person / etc."  It's bologna, of course.

I'm still following a very basic power lifting routine (Squat, Press, Bench, DL), I'm progressing quite well.  My working set weights have exceeded my max attempts from when I started and I feel great.  My bench has really gone up and I notice a huge improvement in my set for grippers (whodathunk).

As I said, I'm actively training for King Kong:

I feel very strong on the Flask, but I am really hating the Moon Top right now.  I can move fairly heavy weight with it but the pick height relative to the lift height is the problem.  I have to stand with my feet together in order to get full height without changing my hand/wrist position.  This, of course, affects leverage on the device and is frustrating.  For the crusher, I've been hitting my Inch Training Handle once per week, utilizing about 100# moving the weight as fast as possible attempting a high-pull.  I'm also DL'ing strictly with an axle.  This has helped me work on my DL form as my upper back kept wanting to round over - too many years of improper form have made some bad habits.  I'm using the Crusher about every 9-10 days for about 12-15 singles sprinkled throughout whatever else I'm training.  For the Jug I've spent most of the time working with a piece of 2" Schedule 40 (2.375" OD) and my anvil. My anvil prepped me so well for Nate's contest in February I see no reason to make things any more complicated.

The reason that I've fallen off the map on the Grip Board is because of time.  Running a business is extremely rewarding but also very time consuming.  I had to decide what things were most important to me.  I really enjoy the Grip Board when I'm on here, and especially like everyone's log (usually about the only thing I read unless I see that Tommy Jennings is in on a topic).  So in July, when I really started noticing how little time I had, I removed the internet browser from my phone.  Remember when smart phones came out and everyone talked about how much more productive they would be?  Everywhere I go I see people with their heads down staring at their phone as if there is something there that is qualitatively better than the people, places, and things around them. The internet, social media, the news - it's all a big time-suck.  I gotta tell you, I haven't read the news headlines in over 2 months (feels good, try it), and I don't give a poop what is going on with the President, foreign countries, or any of that stuff.  It's not like my knowledge of it can change anything anyway.  The time I get with my family is of much higher quality too, you don't realize how much time you spend in front of a screen until you stop.

I still stop in from time to time to check everybody out and see when/where contests are being held.  Look forward to seeing and meeting you guys in the future.

I think under the World of Grip rules, you might be allowed to put something under your feet to give you more vertical inches at lockout [but you would then also be forced start with the MoonTop lower to the ground.]
I remember David mentioning that in a video once, but I could not find if on a fast search of his youtube site...
but here is one event where David puts it in writing on his "official rules" page, so you might want to ask the KingKong promoters about this:
http://www.davidhorne-gripmaster.com/bhsarules.html

look under the meat hook lift and here David says:
"Meat Hook Deadlift
A pair of World of Grip Meat Hooks are used, these are 12mm diameter steel. Also needed is a barbell and weights, which of course are calibrated and scaled.
All weights/barbell and Meat Hooks are included in the total weight.

The Meat Hooks are grasped only on the top 6” area that is not painted, and the other ends are hooked under the barbell. This event is performed similar to a double vertical bar lift. It is advisable to lift the barbell by straddling it, as then the bar does not slide against your shin.

The lifter will raise the weights until both sides are a minimum of 4 inches off the ground and then lower it down again without losing the grip. The referee will say ‘down’ when the height is achieved so that the athlete knows they have reached the appropriate height. The lifting hands and the Meat Hooks must not intentionally touch the legs. No locking of the thumb underneath the fingers (ie. a hook grip) is allowed. It is advisable to use two 4” high markers set in front of the weight plates to referee the height lifted.

If you need extra height to gain the minimum height lift, then like other events you can stand on either weight plates or blocks to achieve this."

Also under the "One Hand Lift (4")" david says:
"The athlete may use wooden blocks to stand on if they struggle to lift the apparatus to the required height, as long as they do not get in the way of the lift."

Quick Update:

I had a brief hiatus after Gripmas due an illness and just general exhaustion.  Squats are now ATG and I'm liking it... I have noticed some pain in my left ankle after squats, I'm hoping its just a flexibility issue.  Might need to get some some bonafide squatting shoes.  Training for the Arizona Competition which I am very excited about.

Saxon bar is going well.  Last night I got 180# for 5 sets of fast triples.  Given the speed and my confidence at lockout I believe that a body weight pull will be possible.  Depending on my body weight of course.  2 more weeks of training the Saxon bar 2 times per week and I am going to shift the focus to the thick-bar event for 4 weeks.  After the 4 weeks I'll see where I am at.  I would also like to finally get a 150# gripper in a competition.    Just for kicks, I did a fast double on a 130# gripper last night.
