Guest PineAway
This is embarrassing to be saying in a board full of Certified Captains of Crush... But I have a lot of trouble closing my Trainer . I think it's because my hand is to small. From wrist to top of the middle finger is only 7 inches. I use a number 1 right now, and just do reps as far as I can (which is like 1/5 of an inch from touching). But still, closing my trainer, handle to handle, is a difficult feat. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. -Kevin
Matt Van Weele
Try doing negatives with your #1. Wannagrip has program called KTA. I've never used it but alot of guys with real strong hands swear by it. If your serious about grip I might look into it. But first I would try some other things. Good Luck. RSW
Try "setting" the gripper by positioning it (and partially closing it) with your other hand. You will probably be able to close it. You could also try working with a sporting goods store gripper (the ones with the plastic handles), and/or putty while you build your strength up. Tou
Small hands are not an excuse. Mine are 7" also. KTA is the way.
Sybersnott
Everyone started somewhere. I know a lot of people that can't close my Trainer, so don't worry, ya got a lot of company. First thing, get the book, "Mastery Of Hand Strength" by John Brookfield (it's on the IronMind website) and read it. Practice negatives by closing the gripper against your leg/hip... these are called "cheat closes" because you cheat the gripper shut, then when it's shut you then try to hold it shut for as long as possible. Any questions, just ask us... we are here to help ya! BTW, welcome to the GripBoard!!

Jonathan McMillan
Pineaway, Don't worry about it, keep working hard, and one day that trainer of yours will feel easy to you I guarantee it!!!! Jon@han
don of tha new grip
Let me just say KTA!! I wasn't able to close my #1 for almost a year but after gettin KTA I was able to close it about a month later, but if you do look into gettin it you'll need the #2 also. Also, Welcome to the best dawm forum on the net.
Strong Man
pineaway, don't worry with more training on the grippers you'll have the trainer down and mashed in no time, and don't worry my hands are also 7" it does suck but you can do! Guest PineAway
Hm, I think i need to clarify it a bit more to some... It's not that i can't close it because I'm to weak. I can rep the CoC number 1 to 1/8 of an inch for like 15 reps... with that being said, i dont think the trainer should be hard to close handle to handle. Could be wrong though. Tou
I can rep the CoC number 1 to 1/8 of an inch for like 15 reps... If you can rep the #1 for 15 reps at 1/8, you can rep it for 7-8 reps FULL close. You can also mash the T for many reps.
don of tha new grip
Sounds like you need to find out how to set your gripper then.
Digdogz
Pine away, I remember when I first got my No.1, I took it out the packet fully believing that Im was gonna shut it first time, as I thought all my forearm training would have put me a cut above the rest.....but.....I got the beast down to about 1/2" and was mortified. That was when I discovered this board and by reading the older posts and listening to the advice being handed out it was not long before I was on reps with the beasty! IMHO from what i picked up it was the idea in my head that when I wanted to train I was going for the goal of closing it every time and before long this was so. As I have also learnt everyone is different but keep it in your mind that you will do it and practise on singles with the gripper firmly placed in the most 'obvious'/comfortable position in your hand. Keep it up, Digz.
bport
I agree that the proper set could help you a lot . If you can do reps and almost close the #1 it sounds like you have the strength, now you just need the technique. If you do go for the KTA it has videos of how to set by a few grip masters. Good luck.
stratavarious_connection
The set is critical when trying to close a gripper that nears your limit of strength...however, it very well could be possible that you are the rare possesor of a " strong" Trainer , although I've never heard of such a thing. Also, the way in which the way each gripper fits in your hand could be a partial explaination as to the results you are obtaining ..... Pine, it seems as though you have been given some good advice already by previous posts. I wish you the best.
thomas straub
if your stuck on a gripper the best thing to do is negitives.....i couldn't get the #2 past 1/8 until i started doing negitives!!!!!! good luck
Guest PineAway
Could someone go into detail about a 'set'? Maybe explain how its done? It just seems like no matter how I position the gripper in my hand I can't get it past 1/16 of being shut.
RSW
It just seems like no matter how I position the gripper in my hand I can't get it past 1/16 of being shut. I was the same way with my #2, until I became strong enough to close it! That last 1/16th" can be tough. Can you hold the gripper closed after a 2-handed close? If not, then you definitely have some work to do. Just keep at it.
Guest GregH
Buy the KTA e-book. It will show you in picture-form all about the set. It also gives you a step-by-step approach to work your way up the gripper ladder.
Saris
My hands are a little over 7 inches long, and thin in comparison to most men´s hands. I don´t think it would have been possible for me to close the Trainer - even in a "cheat close" - if I had been completely untrained the first time I tried. A couple of years ago, when I worked hard at the grippers, I could mash the No1 with either hand and hold it closed for more than 20 seconds. Later this summer I´ll start to go for the No2. If I succeed, I might buy the No3... Tobbster.
