Roark
Gym where I work out recently increased the wrist roller bar to about 1.5" diameter, and knurled it- it's great. Except: the knurling is also where the rope gathers on the bar, and the knurling is fraying the rope and has eaten half way through it. So it you make one, leave the middle section unknurled, or put some duct-tape on it for safety.
OldGuy
My own experience has led me to believe that using wristrollers of between 1 3/8'' and 1 1/2'' diameter and non knurled work best for me. I prefer to have to grip the smooth bar very tightly to keep it from slipping. This way I am working grip more intensely as well as forearms. I had been using it hooked onto a loading pin and mounted across a power rack, until it occured to me to hook onto the low pulley instead. I have stopped doing it for a while to focus on wrist barbell curls.
Tom of Iowa2
We have a very thin gauge aircraft cable on our wrist rollers.
